Your tributes to Arsenal duo
As Arsenal's triumphant Double-winning season draws to a close, so the curtain come down on the careers of two Arsenal legends - Bob Wilson and Lee Dixon.
Send your tributes to Bob and Lee. Club servants come no more loyal than goalkeeping coach Bob Wilson. With the club for 39 years, he was involved in winning three Doubles with the Gunners. And the ex-Scotland and Arsenal keeper proudly marked his last day with the club by holding the Premiership trophy aloft at Highbury, flanked by his star pupils David Seaman, Richard Wright and Stuart Taylor. Signed from Stoke by George Graham for £350,000 in January 1988, Lee Dixon quickly installed himself as defensive lynchpin in the Gunners' legendary 'back five' of the nineties. But having bagged a trophy haul that includes two Doubles, and suffering increasingly from injury, Dixon decided to bow out on a high, with manager Arsene Wenger's blessing. Send your tributes to two Arsenal greats. This debate is now closed Bob, thank you for lighting up my support for Arsenal since 1970, for your sincerity, humanity, loyalty and ability, and Lee, thank you for your skill and your honesty. You have both made your place in the Great History of Arsenal. Best wishes for your future.
Even as a Spurs supporter it was difficult not to like Bob Wilson. He always spoke intelligently and, along with so many players of that era, he was a real gentelman.
Best wishes for the future, thanks for all you have given back to AFC. I still remember our squash games together at Potters Bar - many moons ago!
Dixo, you were one of the best crossers of the ball I ever saw and your fighting spirit shone through to the end. Bob, what can I say? You are a legend! Bob, it Seems odd but I've just turned 36, and you've been at Arsenal for longer than I've been on this planet - need I say more? Thank you, and hope to see you around in Dorset during your even more golden years!
Lee, you'll always be a big part of the fantastic memories I have of Arsenal. No doubt you'll be joining the many of us hoping to turn up the heat at the new Arsenal stadium. Good luck, and thanks mate! Congratulations to Lee Dixon and Bob Wilson for a great season, and thanks for your many years of service.
As an old-timer, I've been an Arsenal fan since my grandfather first took me to Arsenal as a small boy in the 30's to watch the likes of Hapgood, Bastin and Drake. Arsenal were the very best in those days, just as they are today.
Now my American son has become an avid supporter, and he joins me in wishing Lee and Bob all the very best. I started supporting Arsenal in the late 80's. Lee, part of that legendary back four, has done wonders at Arsenal, and I wish him all the best for the future.
David Seaman is still the best keeper in England. He is only the best because he was coached by the best. I wish him the best of luck for the future. My day was made when, as an 11-year-old boy, I saw Bob Wilson, Arsenal goalkeeping coach, on television wearing the tie that I had bought that day. As far as Lee Dixon goes, last summer I bought my father an Arsenal shirt for his birthday, and, as he had played at right-back and was at the ripe old age of 56, the number two seemed appropriate (as I was 20, Ashley Cole's number three seemed appropriate).
Two figures who have made the club what it is: the best in England. May you both have a long and happy retirement.
Good on you Bob. I didn't know you were still around.
What ever happened to Charlie George?
All the best Bob and Lee, both of you made an outstanding and loyal contribution to Arsenal. Good luck in your future endeavours. (Lee if you want to come and play for Wolves we would be very happy to have you).
I watched Bob Wilson from the North Bank when they won the Double. He was always such a commanding figure. Good luck in your retirement Bob, and thanks for everything you have done for Arsenal.
Thank you both very much for giving your all to Arsenal over the years. Good luck for the future!!
Congratulations Lee - I saw you play one of your two games for Burnley at Leicester (my husband in a Burnley supporter) but I was an Arsenal season ticket holder for many years before emigrating to New Zealand. Enjoy your retirement.
As any sportsman will tell you, there's nothing like leaving on a high note. This is, in particular, a fantastic tribute to two Arsenal legends-hardworking yet effective, and extremely committed to the cause of the Gunners. I have been an admirer of Lee Dixon ever since I started watching Arsenal play. I liked his approach to the game-tidy and dedicated. He's kept it going for 14 years since joining Arsenal, and although age and injury have diminished his speed, his love for the club has not waned. I never saw Bob Wilson play, but it's a wonder how much he's put into the club long after his playing career was over. Whenever I see David, Richard or Stuart play, I am reminded of Bob's love and the effort he puts into ensuring that they perform consistently well. And 39 years is no joke. We can say that Arsenal has become his family!
Sad that two living legends have to go, but we're thankful for their years and their memories. You can take a man away from Arsenal, but you can never take Arsenal away from the man!!
We were lucky to have you two play at the club.
I was at the match today and it was a fantastic atmosphere for Lee's last game. I've followed your whole career, Lee you have been a fantastic servant to the club. Thank you for some wonderful memories. Best wishes to you and Bob.
Farewell to two of the greatest Arsenal men of all time. You will both be missed badly and I send you my best wishes for a happy and active future.
Lee will always be remembered for that amazing own goal, and how come Arsenal are the only team with a TV pundit in their midst? It's a conspiracy, I tell you. Faithful servants both will be missed immensely.
Thank you for all the sweat, blood and tears you've sacrificed in an effort to help Arsenal, your team mates and most of all yourselves live up to the best traditions of the club. God bless you both!
Thanks for many years of enjoyment and your service to both club and fans alike. And thanks too to Uncle Arthur who encouraged my support of Arsenal back in the early 70's. Best wishes for whatever you choose to pursue next. You will be missed.
Three cheers to three great Gunners (Lee, Grimandi and Wilson)!!! Your places in the Highbury Hall of Fame are cast in stone.
I always liked Bob Wilson - a very good keeper & a nice bloke.
Lee Dixon was (& probably still is) one of the best full-backs around. Best wishes in your next careers boys - you've done football proud.
Cheers for the memories lads. I never saw Bob play, but a 39 year career at Highbury is outstanding, he was of course an original Double-winner. As for Lee, he was playing in the team when I started supporting the club at the start of the '90s. Cheers mate, a great and loyal servant.
This is surely a very happy ending for both of these Arsenal greats by winning the Double. Goodbye Lee and Bob you will be terribly missed. Long live Lee and Bob.
Thank you Lee and Bob. You truly are Arsenal legends.
Lee was, and is, one of the best defenders in the world. Decisive in the 98 Double season, vital in this season's double. Saved Arsenal's blushes in the cup semi-final. Bob served us well. Look what he made of David Seaman! Thanks for everything.
I don't actually support Arsenal but my dad does, and I quite often watch them. I know that Lee Dixon and Bob Wilson will be deeply missed by fans and the rest of the team. I wish them both the best for the future. I look forward to hopefully seeing Lee in Tony Adams' testimonial on Monday when I go to Highbury.
Some Arsenal greats are leaving after outstanding long careers. I wish them the very best of luck.
I'm just old enough (37) to remember Bob playing, cheers on a remarkable career at Arsenal. That Double-winning side of 71 is still a legend in my book. Good luck. Lee, it won't be the same without you in the Arsenal defence. Good luck on whatever you decide to do next.
Thank you both for your wonderful service to the club. You'll both be missed by the fans.
I wish both of them good things in their future endeavour.
What a wonderful sight to see Bob Wilson flanked by his successors as Arsenal celebrated the best season ever! You will be sorely missed Bob, but your legacy will live on at the club for a long time to come.
