Your verdict on the World Darts final
Tony David (right) is only the second man from outside the UK to win the Embassy title
Tony David becomes the first Australian to win the Embassy World Darts title with a thrilling 6-4 victory over England's Mervyn King.

Send us your verdict on the final, and the tournament.

HAVE YOUR SAY

A 66-1 outsider at the start of the tournament, Tony David has caused a sensation by winning the Embassy World Darts title.

The pressure looked to be taking its toll on the Aussie, who raced into a three-set lead before being pegged back to 5-4, but he held his nerve to take the title.

The victory means that the trophy leaves the UK for only the third time in its 25-year history, and heads Down Under for the first time ever.

Few would argue that the final lived up to its billing, but what did you make of the match, and the tournament?

Send us your verdict on the Embassy World Darts final.

HAVE YOUR SAY

I am the world amateur darts champion and have to say that Tony David's style is unbelievable! I have my own style and recently changed it to suit my arm. I have gone for the robot way like Tony and it has helped me so much. Cheers Tony!
Samuel Peters, UK

Congratulations to Tony not just for overcoming adversity but by being a real gentleman too.
Jeroen, Scotland

Thanks Tony. You did yourself proud. You were steady throughout. You had a never say die attitude. That's what it takes. Best of luck for the future.
Vincey O'Connor, N. Ireland

What a brilliant final, King fought back, like a King, but I thought the best man won. He deserves to win, after having his dream, and overcoming all his health problems. Well done to him, I say.
Jennie Wills, Plymouth

One of the best since Steve Beaton won the title. Congratulations to Tony not just for overcoming adversity but by being a real gentleman too.
Jeroen, Scotland

I would like to congratulate Tony David on winning the Embassey darts tournament, he played superb darts all week and really deserved to win it, I hope he can make it to the Scottish open next month because I think he will win that too. Once again, well done champ.
Kate Monaghan, Scotland

It was just agony seeing him miss those chances at double tops in the ninth
Gavin Versi, England

Darts is a sport just made for television. It's so fast and the result can hang on a millimetre's difference. The final was a superb show and exciting right from the start. As an Aussie who has lived in the UK for 13 years I was thrilled to see Tony David win. All I want to know is, why isn't darts on the television more often?
Natalie Greenway, Australia/UK

That was one of the greatest darts matches I've ever seen. Merv King just couldn't find his form, but Tony David, surely one of the nicest sportsmen there is, is a truly deserving winner, and it was just agony seeing him miss those chances at double tops in the ninth. Imagine what was going through his mind when he had shots to realise his dream. Well done Tony.
Gavin Versi, England

A stunning week of darts and hopefully the BBC will show more of this exciting sport throughout the rest of 2002. As for the Aussie winner Tony David - he was inspirational and his story is the best in world sport since Goran Ivanisevic won Wimbledon last year.
Russell Patterson, Northern Ireland

A truly brilliant final. The best since Mike Gregory v Phil Taylor. Although the checkout stats were below average, from both players, some of the outshots David went for were reminiscent of exhibition darts.

I totally backed Tony David for the final - he is the world's nicest guy
Laura Etheridge, England

And the post match commentary had to be the best ever with that live link to Australia. Can't wait for 2003, hopefully with the return of Phil Taylor, because as everybody knows there is only one darts tournament in the world - the Embassy.
Andy Mackie, Wales

I'm so glad Tony David held on to win the final. I really wish him all the best in the future after all the difficulties he's had in life - what a great bloke you are mate!
Leon, England

I totally backed Tony David for the final - he is the world's nicest guy. And as far as I am concerned he is like a role model to me, an inspiration because he has never given up on his dreams. Strength and courage have helped him achieve his goals and I am positive that he will stay an inspiration for me throughout my life to achieve my goals. Well done Tony, no one deserved it more than you.
Laura Etheridge, England

Well done Tony. It's nice to see an outsider win and then see how much it means to them afterwards. Brilliant!
Jonny Elworthy, Farnborough, England

Congratulations Tony for playing a great final and becoming the new world champ. Great coverage BBC.
Doug Bremner, Townsville, Australia

You played hard and tough and got the right result in the end! Congratulations.
Megan, Australia

I was a mate of Tony David's years ago in Townsville. I got the shock of my life to see him on the telly and vying for the world championship. He's a really nice bloke and I'm pleased to seeing him doing so well. Good luck Tony!
Geoff Lamperd, UK

Well done Tony! I knew you could do it, just like the first time I watched you win the Australian Masters in Geelong (and told you you'd win it)! You played hard and tough and got the right result in the end! Congratulations.
Megan, Australia

A wonderful performance. His chat with his Dad and Mom live at the phone in the BBC studio was really heartwarming!
Erik Reijnen, The Netherlands

I saw Tony David play in the semi-final and immediately thought this man's got what it takes: courage. Tony kept his cool and won a game which he will not forget for a while. I've heard of people saying they'll root for David because of his disability. What!? This man did not come all the way from Australia for your pity, he came to achieve his goal and realise his dream, which is playing darts.

The BDO championship produced a far better spectacle than the shambles of a one-sided Phil Taylor romp in the PDC
David, Scotland

The fact that he reached the final was a bonus, winning the title must feel like he is on cloud nine and he deserves it. Thank you David, you're a real Goliath, hope you have a long and happy career. Congratulations.
Hanie Bagil, England

It must be said that the BDO championship produced a far better spectacle throughout the week compared to the shambles of a such scared opposition allowing it to be one-sided Phil Taylor romp as usual in the PDC version. A worthy winner in Tony David. You cannot get a better fairytale story of a disabled player beating the odds throughout his life of chronic pain and fulfilling a lifetime ambition.
David, Scotland

Tony is a real champion. An excellent win, but a gentleman as well. Does he have his own website?
Adam Bracegirdle, England

After helping Bob Taylor, Tony's opponent, overcome an injury to play in the quarters, knowing Bob was favourite, Tony deserves to win. That is the kind of friendliness and character that the sport of darts deserves! Well done I say!
Mark, England

Please could someone let me know Tony David's intro song onto the stage in the final.
Paul, UK

Tony, it was inspirational to watch you win
Sean, England

Well, we taught the world darts, and now they are teaching us! But at the end of the day Tony David deserved to win, the skill and determination he has put into fulfilling his dream is so admirable. A true role model for people trying to achieve their dreams. What a great guy!
Laura Etheridge, England

Tony, it was inspirational to watch you win. You deserve all the credit that is coming your way. Good on yer mate! Sean.
Sean, England

Although our heroes went out before the final, I really enjoyed the tournament. David is a real champ and the King will be back next year!
Ilona Oerlemans, The Netherlands

I thinks it's time for the BDO and Skol companies to unite, and then we will really see who is the best, and if anyone can stop Phil Taylor.
Jon, England

Onya Tony...what a fairytale. The final made a great viewing at the Shepherds Bush Walkabout.
Adam, England

He will take a lot from this experience and will be a stronger, more relaxed player the next time he reaches a final
Tony Glass, Australia

I thought the final was a little disappointing as Mervyn King didn't play as well as he had done through out the tournament. Having said that, Tony David has been pretty consistent all the way through and thoroughly deserved his win.
John Simpson, UK

My brother and I sat next to Tony on the plane to England before last years world championship. He is a top man and well deserves his title.
Rob Temple, England

First of all, on behalf of Tony's family and friends, thank you to the BBC for the internet coverage. If not for this, we would not have seen Tony grind out his win. I managed to spend a couple of hours on the phone to Tony the morning of the final and we discussed the need for him to keep to his normal routine as much as possible during the day.

We knew both players would struggle with the tension in the final so we discussed the need for Tony to focus on his technique, set-up and action so as not to be over run by emotion. I felt the final was a bit of a grind but the lad came through. He will take a lot from this experience and will be a stronger, more relaxed player the next time he reaches a final. Congratulations Tony, you did it mate.
Tony Glass, Australia

Top bloke - well done mate!
Paul, England

As soon as saw Tony had the third highest average after the first round I thought it was worth a flutter at 33-1. Obviously players can have on and off days, but what impressed me was his technique. I thought it would prove to be a winning factor when the pressure was on and thus I'm happy to see he indeed handled the nerves the better in the final. More darts on TV please!
Andy Brown, UK

HELP! I thought someone called Phil Taylor just won the world championship? What is going on? I am not a darts fan just confused.
Richard, Panama

Congratulations to Tony David. A great win against all the odds and a real fairy tale after all he's apparently been through. Top bloke - well done mate!
Paul, England

After Phil Taylor's predictable landslide win in the rival Skol world championship, Tony David's victory in the BDO version of the event was a revelation. This year's standard of darts thrown in the Embassy may have fallen short of previous years, but David played consistently well throughout the event to emerge a worthy winner.

While it's great for the game of darts to see an overseas player take a major tournament, however, I must say that the prominence of "internationals" in the BDO event possibly owes more to the better Englishmen electing to throw their arrows elsewhere. Phil Taylor is still the best player in the game.
Stephen, Manchester, England

He played very well to make this one of the biggest upsets that in recent times
Glenn Sutton, England

Well done to Tony David and to the BBC. As ever, the coverage of the Embassy was superb and the standard of darts of the highest order. Watching the enthusiasm that David brought to his game was superb. I could barely watch the last few legs!
Neil, UK

I knew Tony David would win it since I saw him play in the second round. He has played very well to make this one of the biggest upsets that I have seen in recent times. I hope next year's competition will be as exciting and as unpredictable as this year was, I can't wait.
Glenn Sutton, England

Tony played very well but Mervyn was a bit off the pace at the start of the match. If Mervyn had played as well as he did against 'Barney' he would have won.
Scott Woodburn, England

The darts last night made superb viewing. Both players contributed to a tension filled evening. More darts on the TV please.
Roger

You little ripper, never a more deserving champion.
Westend Darts, Australia

Is this still considered a watchable sport?
Graham, Scotland

Mervyn became very popular here when he wore that orange shirt but Tony won many hearts with his life story and I backed him to win the final. I have to admit that I had barely ever heard his name before this year's tournament and he caught my attention only when he got to the quarter finals. But an Australian victory is great for darts as a global sport! And for England it must've seemed like another Ashes defeat.
Marcel de Vries, The Netherlands

Good Heavens. Is this still considered a watchable sport? I think "Not the 9 O'Clock News" did a good sketch about this about 20+ years ago. My opinion still hasn't changed.
Graham, Scotland

A great final. Very tense. Glad that Tony David won. I'm all for the underdog winning. Great last dart. Capped off a marvellous week.
Neil, England

Could you please tell me how many maximums each of the players scored in the final of the World Darts Championship at the lakeside?
James Boyle, Scotland

Way to go Tony.
Pearl and Frank Koch, Australia

Marcel de Vries, The Netherlands

A fantastic final and a worthy winner in Tony David, he played a blinder, nice one mate.
Rob Envine, England

It's all about the doubles, especially the crucial ones
Driekus Taartpunt, The Netherlands

An incredible win from an incredible human being. The things heroes are made of. We're all very proud of you David, keep reaching for the stars mate.
John, Aussie

A fantastic effort from a man who has suffered so much to get where he is. It's just a pity that his victory will go almost unnoticed in Australia.
Ron Ward, Australia

It goes to show, that statistics lie and that it's all about the doubles, especially the crucial ones. Though Raymond van Barneveld may hold the highest average, it was Mervyn King who crushed him on the doubles, and Tony did the same thing to Mervyn in the final. He's a worthy champion.
Driekus Taartpunt, The Netherlands

I saw Tony play on Wednesday night when he was awesome against Marko Pusa. Have been cheering him on ever since. Huge congratulations to him for a tremendous effort - that coming from a Pommie too!
Chris, UK

A truly marvellous sporting moment. A great contest, full of drama and a marvellous finish. I'm so happy that Tony David won, it was another moment that shows that in sport, it's all about living the dream, and that's what David did on Sunday.
Richard, Wakefield, England

Delighted to see a man who triumphed over adversity to take the title. Tony, you're an inspiration to everybody. Congratulations.
