Your Bertie Mee tributes
Arsenal's double-winning manager has died at the age of 82.
Send us your tributes to the Highbury legend. Bertie Mee took over at Arsenal in 1966 after six years as physio, and went on to become one of the club's most successful managers. He led the Gunners to two League Cup finals and the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, but will always be remembered for masterminding Arsenal's double-winning season in 1970-71. Charlie George's famous winner in the FA Cup final against Liverpool capped a dream season for Mee and his team, in which they secured the title with a victory over Spurs after winning 11 of their last 13 games. Mee played for Derby County before injury cut short his career, and he later moved on to manage Watford. E-mail us your memories of Bertie.
As a young student in England it was soon clear that Arsenal under the astute management, guidance and focus of Bertie Mee was THE team for me. Bertie's exceptional and excellent skills as manager brought us the Double and I have been an ardent Arsenal supporter up to this day. Indeed a sad loss for the club and football circle.
I am a 36-year-old Greek man and fan of Arsenal for the last 30 years. Bertie Mee was my first hero he was the man that inspired me to become a fan of the greatest club in England and I will always remember him all my life.
Viva Arsenal!
A great manager. I can remember the '71 Double teams' open-top bus parade as if it was yesterday. Thanks Bertie.
Bertie was responsible for putting Arsenal back on the map after 18 barren years. The way he turned the club's fortunes around was amazing and brought some happy memories to N5. Undoubtedly winning the Double was the highlight, especially winning the league at Tottenham to pip Leeds for the title. Like the line in the Arsenal song goes...."Good old Bertie! We're proud to say that name! While we sing this song we'll win the game!"
For the determination, dignity and honour with which he brought happiness to all Arsenal fans, he will always be remembered with great affection.
Rest in Peace.
It is a sad day for the sport. In my opinion Bertie Mee was the 'Gentleman of Soccer'. I will always remember the 1970/71 season when we did the double. He will not be forgotten.
Bertie Mee was the first Arsenal manager of my memory, his style of low profile management didn't always earn him the plaudits that he truly deserved - but he does and always will hold a very special and privileged place in the clubs history. Peaceful journey Bertie.
It is a sad time for all concerned that another great of the game has passed away. His most memorable achievement being the Double to emulate the cross town rivals Spurs, in what was then considered to be almost the impossible.
In this day and age of records falling on a yearly basis one has to realise how in his day his peers respected him, our generation will remember him as a humble fellow whom will be missed by all that knew him.
I remember in my school days that to be an Arsenal supporter was a joke! "Never out of the first division, never in it!" was the popular saying of the day. Bertie Mee changed all that. He came along and formed a team that put the great back in Arsenal. The ridicule stopped after that. He helped to awaken a giant from a long sleep. Thank you Bertie, God Bless.
Bertie Mee was the first manager I remember and he was one of the reasons to be proud of Arsenal and still makes you proud to say that name.
Bertie Mee was one of those men that has made Arsenal the great club that it is today. All Arsenal have a big thanks to dedicate to Mr. Mee
A sad day. As a Watford supporter, Bertie has a special place in our thoughts. A 'football great' who helped to turn our club around.
Bertie Mee was one of the finest managers in English football history, never mind Arsenal's. He will live on in the hearts of true fans everywhere.
RIP the Arsenal legend. One of the greatest managers ever.
