Can Bassett keep Leicester up?
Leicester City are set to appoint Dave Bassett as manager on a short term deal until the end of the season.
Can he save the Foxes from relegation? Harry Redknapp and George Graham were the early favourites to take over from Peter Taylor at Filbert Street. But the Premiership's bottom club have instead turned to the former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United manager to save them from the drop. Bassett, no stranger to relegation battles, will be appointed until the end of the season. His contract is believed to include a hefty survival incentive, but can he keep Leicester in the Premiership? Are the Foxes right to appoint Bassett? And what does the future hold for the ailing Midlands club?
I think they should have splashed out and gone for a continental manager such as John Toshack who has managed the best players in the world. He'd be happy to come back and would play the right way.
Great news! Redknapp and Graham were never realistically going to join a club like Leicester, and we need experience of top flight management to keep us up. We used to have average players who were well motivated. Under Taylor, those players were expected to play beyond their ability and the spitit and motivation was lost.
Bassett will not win us the league, but let's face it, we are in a dire situation and at least he will bring back some of the spirit and passion so lacking under Taylor. The appointment of Mickey Adams as number two is a steal and gives great hope for the future. If we can pursuade Bobby Zamora to follow, then the goals should come as well. Where's the money conming from - bye bye Akinbiyi!
I wasn't very impressed until I heard that Micky Adams was joining as well. This now seems to be an excellent choice as Adams is one of the best young managers around, and will gain further from learning the Premiership ropes from Dave Bassett.
At least Leicester didn't make the mistake of appointing Craig Brown. Fans must remember that Leicester is not one of the rich clubs, but one that got to the Premiership through the skills on one man - O'Neill. But that is all history now and he wouldn't want to come back.
We can afford Dave Bassett and he is a fighter. If he can shake some stamina and direction into the players, and ditch some of the slackers, then we will be on our way to success and survival.
The manager is the least of our problems with the majority of our players either resigned to going back where they they belong (i.e. Division One), or those capable of playing in the Premiership rubbing their hands at the prospect of a fat signing on fee elsewhere. When inspirational players like Elliot seemed resigned to the fact that we're done for then what hope is there? Hasn't Elsom looked at Derby? Wonderful stadium but no investment is going to mean all three East Midlands teams together again - in Division One!
Dave Bassett has had his time in football. The days of man-motivators with no coaching or tactical acumen have passed. Whilst Leicester are a poor side technically and he may get results in the short term, it is a step backwards for Leicester. They will rue his appointment when they fall into the Nationwide League. At least Bassett's style will work there.
It's not the manager that is the problem at the moment. the lack of strength and that fighting Leicester spirit has gone. Somebody has got to get grip of the team and if a man who could turn a team like Wimbledon into a credible side is the option then let's go for it.
Leicester City fans seem to think we should have Alex Ferguson or David O'Leary as our next manager, as only the best is good enough. Get real! Leicester are a poor club, with players and board to match. People like Martin O'Neill don't grow on trees, they come along once in a blue moon.
We have to face reality - Bassett maybe the cheap option, but probably the only realistic one. He's available, he knows and loves the game. The best I and other City fans can do is get behind him and the team and stop moaning "cheap options". Come on Leicester supporters - SUPPORT!
I can't believe that Leicester have taken another step back. Harry Bassett was a good manager a long time ago but his thinking on football is now outdated. Wrong Harry, I think the Foxes are going down!
Congratulations to Harry Redknapp, who¿s proved himself to be the canniest operator in the English game - landing a better deal at Portsmouth by feigning interest in another job - sheer class! Commiserations to poor old Leicester, who took him seriously and duly sacked Peter Taylor, one of the best young coaches around. I¿m sure all those Foxes fans out there who were calling for Taylor¿s head will be delighted now they¿ve secured the services of Dave Bassett - his experience of managing mediocre First Division teams will be invaluable next year.
Let's be honest here. It was in large part Taylor's bungling, inexperienced, management, too many inept signings and his hand-picked mediocre backroom staff that brought us to this.
I doubt very much that Bassett was a "cheap option" - no Premiership manager is cheap these days. Can the chirpy old yo-yo club warhorse Dave Bassett and the seemingly very talented Micky Adams keep us up? As a life long Leicester fan I damn well hope so.
They didn't save Nottingham Forest, and they won't save Leicester.
Micky is really the top cat among the rising managerial stars. He's the indisputable leader of the pack. Leicester will be mid-table by Christmas and have a chance of finishing in Europe.
Same old whinge from Leicester fans, scream for the manager to be sacked then blast the Board for appointing the wrong man to replace him. Ask them who they want, and apart from Sven or Martin they haven't got a clue. Remember, it's the same fans who were booing O'Neill and calling for his head after ten games. They deserve what they are about to get.
I'm totally gutted as an avid Brighton fan. We'll be lucky to keep the team together, keep Bobby Zamora and stay up now. Most of the team were only there because of Micky.
Just when you think things can't get any worse the board at Leicester City prove us wrong. How they think that Dave Bassett can improve on anything that Peter Taylor achieved is a complete mystery. From the long list of losers that have been touted by the national press as replacements for Taylor they've opted for perhaps the worst of the lot, with the possible exception of Jim Smith.
The only ray of hope is the appointment of Mickey Adams as assistant. If we somehow avoid relegation this year maybe he could prove to be a good long term appointment.
Great! Another cheap lower division manager. Bring back O'Neill!
Let's face it, this is not the "cheap" option, it's the only option, after the likes of Graham and Redknapp not wanting to get involved, you have to take what's left - sort of scraping the bottom of the barrel!
Well done chairman! Leicester have again appointed an up-and-coming (potential) manager following the successes with Little, McGee (to a degree) and O'Neill. The guidance of an experienced hand from Bassett should turn around the fortunes of the club ensuring Adams isn't dropped in at the deep end of the Premiership.
What are these Leicester fans on about? The only reason that David Bassett got the job is that he is the only one brave and desperate enough to take the job. Who in their right mind would want to manage Leicester at the moment?
Leicester will pay the price of bowing down to the pressure of sacking Peter Taylor and it will serve them right. It amazes me that the directors at football clubs still don't realise that patience is a virtue. I will not pity Derby County or Leicester when they get relegated.
As a Sheffield United supporter, I am amazed people suggest that Dave Bassett cannot cause a club to prosper and is not a top manager. Six promotions with three clubs, a play-off final place, and ninth in the old First Division is hardly the record of an unsuccessful manager! Don't forget - in 1991 Dave Bassett kept United up from a worse start than Leicester's this season.
I am bitterly disappointed that we have gone for Bassett as manager. It is surely only because he will be a "cheap" option. I think Bassett's best days (such as they were) are behind him, and a little bit of me thinks we are already preparing ourselves for Division One football next season. That said, this is our last season at Filbert Street, and if by some miracle we are still playing Premiership football next season all will be forgiven!
Dave Bassett will have a huge uphill struggle taking on a side who boast no more than three players capable of playing Premiership football. He has no money, no depth to his squad and a team with no commitment to the cause. Not even Martin O'Neill could keep this side up
Bassett has never been a top manager? Thankfully Leicester have never been a top club. His experience at Sheffield Utd and Nottingham Forest may yet keep the Foxes up. And Micky Adams could well be the long term solution.
The club's inability to attract a top manager will lead to certain doom. The club have stressed the need to remain in the Premier League, but is Dave Bassett the man to lead us to safety? I doubt it! The financial side of the club is still spending a pittance on transfers in comparison to other clubs. What you have to ask is: "Where has all the Money gone?"
Bassett has never been a top manger and I don't think his technical know-how is enough to save Leicester from going down. The only candidate who can save the Foxes is Venables. No one else can.
It will be the players, not the manager, who need to keep Leicester up. Why replace Taylor with Bassett, they are both the same type of manager? The right man to steady the ship is George Graham, as he achieved a similar miracle at Spurs.
As a life long follower of LCFC, the club has yet again gone for a cheap solution. Bassett has never been a top manager; I cannot recall any club that has prospered under his leadership. It will be yet another short sighted appointment and a sure ticket to Division One.
