Favourite footy voice?
BBC Sport's John Motson has been voted the 'king of the commentary box'.

But does the man beneath football's most famous sheepskin coat rock your boat?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Motty celebrates 30 years behind the microphone for the BBC on Saturday.

Motson has covered well over 1,000 matches for the BBC, becoming a household name with his unique commentary style.

A scientific study to find the perfect pitch for a commentator scored Motty top, a result backed by a recent poll of fans.

Other top contenders for the title included Sky's Martin Tyler and Alan Parry, ITV's Clive Tyldesley and Channel 5's Jonathan Pearce.

But just how do Motty's dulcet tones rate against footy commentators past and present?

HAVE YOUR SAY

How can you say 'Other top contenders for the title included Sky's Martin Tyler and Alan Parry, ITV's Clive Tyldesley and Channel 5's Jonathan Pearce', and not include your own Barry Davies? He's not a contender but should be the outright winner?
Sincs, UK

Where is mention of Arthur Montford or Archie McPherson? Montford is a legend north of the border - nobody could describe the scrambles at goalmouth better than he?
Graham, Scotland

I didn't think Motty had a good game on Saturday. I couldn't count on the fingers of two hands the number of times he said "This wasn't the situation we were expecting" or "the Germans will be loving this".

I agree that we don't simply require descriptions of what is happening but after 30 years in the job, I think Motty could have shown a bit more inventiveness.
Neil Conacher, UK

I would always go for Brian Moore
SDB, UK

I much prefer the commentaries of Barry Davies to John Motson on the BBC, and in the days when BBC and ITV were head-to-head in the FA Cup final, I would always go for Brian Moore on ITV. Those days are gone, of course, but thankfully Barry continues to give us decent commentary on a multitude of sports.
SDB, UK

I saw this in the paper and laughed! As a doctor, I can tell a voice used properly when I hear it, and I can tell one which strains and struggles. Motty definitely falls into the latter category. The best voice I can think of in football commentary would be Kenneth Wolstenholme, before the days when people shouted and screamed. These days the man who gets closest to having a proper voice is Barry Davies, and the one furthest away is Jonathan Pearce. John Motson is somewhere in the middle.
Hari , England

I bet I'm not the only one who watches matches on the telly with the sound off and listens to the commentary on BBC Five Live with Greenie and co!
John Leeman, UK

Bald commentators seem to be the best - look at Barry Davies, David Coleman, Brian Moore...maybe someone should study that!
Bry, London, England

You know that Motty is feeling exactly what you're feeling
Tom, England
The best football commentator for me is, and will always be, Brian Moore. He struck a great rapport with Kevin Keegan and Big Ron and was always polite. Having said that, John Motson and Barry Davies do follow close behind. Brian Moore may have died, but his commentaries will last forever.
Paul Coote, UK

Spare me! What a ridiculous study if it comes out with Motson and Pearce as top dogs. The two do nothing but scream! I could do that - can I have a job please, BBC? For my money, Barry Davies is the best commentator, and the only person still out there who comes close is Alan Parry (since the sad death of Brian Moore, of course.)
Matt Dawsen, UK

I think a game is much improved with a better commentator - like having Motson instead of Barry Davies. John's just got the passion for the game while Barry seems to just tell the viewer what he's seeing. You know that Motty is feeling exactly what you're feeling.
Tom, England

The King of them all was and always will be Brian Moore
Neill Gray, Chile
I like Barry Davies best. I think he has a better voice and makes more incisive remarks, as well as being quicker on the ball.
J Armitage, United Kingdom

My favourite commentator has always been Barry Davies, although the BBC obviously don't agree with me because they've never really given him the big matches.
D Sanders, England

Motty is certainly the best in his business. However, I feel that another giant time has been over looked - the late, great Brian Moore. Why no mention here? Calm, precise, always articulate and poignant at times, he made us really feel the pulse of the game without making silly comments like Big Ron does or Jonathon Pearce. Perhaps this new generation of pundits should look at the way Motty and Moore did the business.
Mark Anderson, Frankfurt, Germany

The King of them all was and always will be Brian Moore. But that is not to take away from the rest as the UK does boast the greatest commentators in the world. I watch England and the premier League here in Chile with ESPN, and the commentators are very dry and lack any passion for the Game.
Neill Gray, Chile

Whilst Motty is one of the best, Barry Davies has to be number one. Not only is he a king of football, but of so many other sports as well. How can we forget his commentary of the UK v Germany Hockey Olympic Gold. "And where were the German defence. And quite frankly, who cares". Has a familiar ring about it, doesn't it?
Richard Hardiman, UK

Motson deals with action and is a peoples' commentator
Kieran English-Doyle, Ireland
There is no doubt that the best commentator in the game at present is Martin Tyler. He and Andy Gray between them give the best commentary on the game. Instead of simply describing the game in front of our eyes - like some other commentators - they give informative and interesting football knowledge on the game and the players involved. I would rather watch football on Sky Sports One than any other channel.
Steve Stobie, UK

Motty is the best simply because he sounds like a fan, and NOT a journalist or an ex-player. But I'm also a big fan of Stuart Hall's. Superb match summaries on Five Live...
Keith, England

The Sky commentators talk too much about the next game. Tyler and Parry tend to ramble on and on about a players leg injury. Motson deals with action and is a peoples' commentator, interested in the action and what's going on. Clive Tyledsley is not even at the races.
Kieran English-Doyle, Togher, Cork, Ireland

However good he is, Murray Walker would be better!
Rob G, UK

Although he continued long afterwards, listening to the voice of Brian Moore as a youngster in the 70's seemed as much a part of football as the ball and the pitch.
Andrew Carter, UK

I turn the volume down if Motson is commentating on the TV. He is far better on the radio as he has a knack of describing exactly everything that he sees when we can see it anyway! For TV he should inform and analyse not describe what we can see in front of our own eyes.
Peter Limbrick, United Kingdom

Motty is untouchable on the telly, and Alan Green on 5 Live is streets ahead of the rest!
Ali Higgins, UK

The best ever, by a long, long, way was David Coleman back in the 70's. People shouldn't assume that just because someone is popular now in our media-everywhere age that they are the best ever.
Mark B, England

In football, there are bad commentators, good commentators, and excellent commentators and then there's MOTTY! He's simply the VERY BEST. Thanks Motty, for taking football commentary to unprecedented heights, you've made a difference.
H. Radwan, London

I was shocked when I read the short-list of this column where it listed some current commentators. But what about Barry Davies? In my opinion the best in the business. This man is a genius! Not only does he know everything about football, his talents stretch over Olympics, Gymnastics, Wimbledon, the Queens birthday parade! And that's just off the top of my head! But in terms of Motty, he's the Murray Walker of Football.
Pete, England

The BBC has the two kings of football commentary! Motty is untouchable on the telly, and Alan Green on Five Live is streets ahead of the rest!
Ali Higgins, UK
