Should Coventry have let Strachan go?
Gordon Strachan
Coventry City boss Gordon Strachan has left the club 'by mutual consent'.

Are Coventry right to let him go and who will replace the wily Scot?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Gordon Strachan's departure follows Coventry's relegation from the Premier League and a shaky start to life in Division One.

The Sky Blues' home loss to Grimsby triggered noisy demonstrations from the Highfield Road faithful, angry at the mass exodus of Coventry's best players.

Strachan joined Coventry as manager in 1996 after two years as a player, and until last season managed to keep his side in the top flight despite limited squads and funds.

Among the favourites to replace Strachan are Dave Bassett, Bryan Robson and Harry Redknapp, who last week confessed to being bored in his role as director of football at Portsmouth.

Should Coventry have held on to the gritty Scot?

And who will replace him now he's gone?

HAVE YOUR SAY

The Coventry players should hang their heads in shame after the dismal performance on Saturday, they had no intention of playing football and saving Gordon Strachan's position. They have now got rid of a good man and I hope the new manager tells them that they are not indispensable, the man for the job is Joe Royle. Good luck Strachan, look forward to seeing you as Scotland manager.

A bit like Keegan, Strachan's teams never seem to know what to do when Plan A goes wrong
Terry Allcott, Coventry, England
Gordon was a smashing guy - but you always take a risk when you employ a manager with no previous experience. He has not been helped by the Chairman selling players, but Strachan has to answer us about all those players he bought over the last five years who hardly played a first team game between them. A bit like Keegan, Strachan's teams never seem to know what to do when Plan A goes wrong. Let's hope a Swede has the same impact in Coventry and then it would be a fitting setting for a national stadium!.
Terry Allcott, Coventry, England

Strachan was a likeable man and I'm sure all Coventry fans will wish him well for the future. None should have any doubt that he gave 100% for the club. In the end, however, it became apparent that - for whatever reason - he just didn't have what it was going to take to turn the club around and, sadly, he had to go.
Ian Maston, England

I don't think Strachan had much of a chance to do anything with Coventry since every time he seemed to be getting anywhere with a settled side, players were sold behind his back or at least without much say. I can only hope that Coventry's loss can be Scotland's gain.

Roland Nilsson and Richard Money are the right ones for the job permanently
Simon Weil, London, UK
About time! The bottom line is that Strachan is the man that has got us relegated, and continues to lose games in this division. We should be at the top!
Mark , England

We can again be proud to be Sky Blue. Roland Nilsson and Richard Money are the right ones for the job permanently - they will get the right response from the players and supporters and give the right image to the club again. Play Up Sky Blues
Simon Weil, London, UK

The wrong man has gone! Richardson has been responsible for selling every decent player that Gordon has attracted to the club over the last five years, and has now managed to sell the ground as well, with no guarantee of a new one. Good luck Gordon - I hope your genuine enthusiasm and energy are more appreciated somewhere else.
Richard Carey, England

Gordon Strachan has had the best part of five years to make an impact at Coventry without success. Whilst the reason for City's demise cannot be laid purely at Strachan's door (the Chairman must also take his share of the blame) I don't believe that the players fully understood his tactics. Far too often we heard the excuse that the players did not put into practice on match days what they had been asked to do in training.

I think if Harry Redknapp can be persuaded to come to Coventry then the board must do all they can to get him, and quickly. But if Richardson sticks to his current policy of not investing money and selling the best players just because the club owe the bank a few quid, then I don't think Harry would stick around for long! Good luck to whoever takes over! They are going to need it!
Jeremy Baskott, England

In time, he will prove that he has the ability to be a successful manager
Mark, UK
As a Coventry Fan, I am actually quite gutted Strachan has gone. If nothing else he had passion and guts, not like previous managers Howe, Butcher et al. He has tried hard and endeared himself and Coventry to many observers. But it is time to look forward if we are return to the Premiership. Good look Gordon!
Paul Walker, England

Strachan was a great manager. He's been undermined by the chairman's willingness to sell the club's best players. At one stage two seasons ago we were nicknamed 'the entertainers'. However, selling players like Dublin, Huckerby, Keane, Kirkland, Hadji, MacAllister etc has taken its toll, and Strachan has paid the ultimate price. The Chairman must learn to stop promising the world and delivering very little.
Paul Turner, England

I believe Gordon Strachan would have taken Coventry up this season or at least gone very close. He instils pride and passion in his team and he buys very well. In time, he will prove that he has the ability to be a successful manager, although being successful in the Premiership demands totally different attributes than simple blood and guts. I hope he comes back soon because football needs people like Strachan. I wish him all the best.
Mark, UK

Of course it was right for him to go....Coventry are free falling and he can take the chairman too after he managed to take the club £30m into debt! The only replacement that might work at the moment is Paul Daniel !

This is further proof that great players don't necessarily become great managers
Martin Treanor, UK
Yes! Yes! Yes! And Richardson should go as well. They sold players who did not want to leave. So he got £12m for Robbie Keane and dropped out of the Premiership. They both got it very wrong.
R.G. Pardoe, Hong Kong

This is further proof that great players don't necessarily become great managers. In fact, the single-minded determination and narrow focus needed to reach the top as a player is actually counter-productive in management. Strachan's failings were down to poor man-management (nobody performs to their best when being screamed at from the touchlines every week), tactical naivety and a chairman who'd sell his grandmother if it'd raise a few quid. The writing was on the wall for the last 12 months (only 14 wins in the last 57 games) and by hanging on, Strachan only guaranteed relegation. After overseeing five years of steady decline, how he justifies walking away with a million pound pa-off is an interesting question.
Martin Treanor, UK

We need to bring in someone who sees the bigger picture and in my humble opinion, it should be Harry Redknapp. He worked wonders with West Ham and would be just the face to put some sparkle back into Highfield Road.
Darren, England
