Can Ralf make it a family double?
![]()
Ralf Schumacher has completed a great weekend for Williams with victory in an incident-packed German Grand Prix.
Can he overtake McLaren's David Coulthard for second place in the Drivers Championship? Schumacher junior's win means he is now just six points behind McLaren's David Coulthard. Coulthard and Ferrari's Michael Schumacher were among a long list of retirements during the race. Schumacher senior, who still leads the Championship by 37 points, must wait until the next race in Hungary to equal Alain Prost's record of 51 Grand Prix victories. Coulthard has hit out at Formula One's rulers after a restart favoured rival Michael Schumacher, and the pressure seems to be getting to the Scot. Is second place in the Drivers Championship within Ralph's reach? Can he produce the goods over the remainder of the season and edge out David Coulthard?
Peter, Scotland
For me, Ralf is in second place now because he has won three grand prix races this year compared to David's two. Two wins out of twelve races is definitely not championship material.
For the last number of years, the winner in Brazil has taken the championship. Why should it be different this year? Charge on DC!
It seems that McLaren and Williams are competing for a record on retirements this year! Ralf can certainly overtake Coulthard if he can manage to finish a couple of races more than him.
One must admit things are looking very good for the Williams-BMW team after the performance they show in Germany. But with the long straights that sees the cars 'pedal to the metal' for most of the lap, this is far from being a regular F1 track. I believe Williams will not be as dominant in any of remaining races except for Monza. David should finish second this year but next year watch for Ralf, JPM and Michael for a very exiting three-way battle for the championship.
DC will come second...even in a below par car. He continues to show improvement. Give him a reliable car and next year he'll win it - for sure!
Coulthard will be lucky to keep Rubens behind him, let alone Ralf. It's so obvious that DC is out of his depth that Ron Dennis won't have to enforce team orders. Mika will be the more successful McLaren driver from here on in.
McLaren wiil come back strong after the three-week break, as will David Coulthard. The team have been going through a bad spell just lately but they will come good, and so will DC. It has been the car which has let David down, not his driving skills and if he doesn't win the championship (and it is still possible that he can) then he will take second place for sure. Perhaps more of the British F1 supporters should get behind him and stop putting him down so much. He is a nice man, a good driver and he deserves our support.
In my opinion, Ralf Schumacher has proved that he can win and I think he deserves to be the second this year. It would be great to have two brothers in the first three best F1 drivers.
It will be a foolish person to bet against Ralph winning the F1 crown next season.
Ralf has proved from time to time that he has speed. Now he got the package also right, leave this year but I pit him as a future champion. If the reliability of Williams goes on improving then he can pose a challange to seasoned Ferrari's.
David Coulthard will not be able to maintain his second place. He whinges all the time don't allow his driving to do the talking for me. As Michael has said, he can't make a sustained charge at the world title. He always seems to fade to towards the end of the season as he is doing now.
If Williams are a bit more consistent for the last five races, Ralf will definately have a chance of finishing second. And get Montoya to calm down a bit.
Driving a car is not the only one essential skill needed to succeed in the F1 circus. One needs to develop and to stay consistent throughout the whole season and I think here David has failed. Schumi has proved that he is not only a superb driver, but also a marvellous developer and definitely cooperates fluently with engineers. Unfortunately, time has ran out for David. He's not a true champion.
Ralf will finish second without doubt. He is a superior driver in a car which will challenge for the title next year. We may well see both Shuey's, Montoya, and Hakinnen (if he stays) fighting it out next year.It could be interesting.
I think Ralf will overtake David because his car seems to be very solid and he has been racing his big brother very hard.
If everything goes right he is going to be at least 10 points ahead David at the end of the season. I wish Michael some good races because he really deserves to break every record.
After Ralf's success in Germany this weekend, the future looks bright for Williams. I would love to see the two borthers dice it out next season, providing Williams can start well.
Ronnie Mirza, India Coulthard's car has let him down too often to consolidate his second place. It's not a reflection of his driving. Ralf is on a roll in a car that has eventually been sorted out, so must be favourite to take second place.
Next year could be quite different, however.
It's gonna be Micheal, brother Ralf and Rubens at the end of the day. DC will be out of the top three, as McLaren are not as fired up as they were last season. So it's going to be a family affair! Another time perhaps, DC...
I know it's slightly off topic, but do any other fellow Scots share my embarrassment at David Coulthard's constant nursery school whinging?
Clifford Dray, England
Ralf had a good race because this track suited Williams and their BMW engine. I think it would be a very close three way battle between DC, Ralf and Rubens for the second place. You still can't count out McLarens as tracks like Hungary, Japan will suit them.
Hopefully, Ralf will get second. Coulthard has not been a worthy rival for Michael, he was at least half to blame for the Silverstone shunt, and now he's whinging over the race stoppage in Germany when it wouldn't have made any difference.
Ralf probably will beat Coulthard because the McLarens are not doing very well at the moment. They are very unreliable and slow.
Fahd Akram Ali, Pakistan Ralf drove a good race but it has to be admitted he got a stroke of luck with Montoya's retirement. He can definitely pip Coulthard for second place.
The Williams-BMW is an extremely competitive car now, and taking into account McLaren's constant reliability problems, second place in the championship is well within reach.
Ralf will probably beat Coulthard because of the unreliability and speed of the McLarens.
Although I'm a supporter of Michael, it was great to see Ralf winning his home race. I think Ralf and Rubens will both pass DC in the drivers' championship. If DC still thinks he can take the championship then Ralf will do it easily.
