Who's set for Champions League

The draw for the third qualifying round of the Champions League threw up some tough ties for British clubs.

How far can your team go?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Scottish champions Celtic had a superb 3-1 away win against Dutch giants Ajax in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

While Glasgow rivals Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw against Turkish champions Fenerbahce at Ibrox in a fiery encounter.

Liverpool showed few problems against Finnish part-timers FC Haka with a comfortable 5-0 victory giving the Red's a good home advantage for the second leg in two weeks.

How do you rate your team's chances?

Well done to Liverpool and Celtic. Liverpool had a great season last time round and hopefully they will do the same. My biggest delight lies with Celtic. Having watched them flounder domestically and on the European stage for years, hopefully the rest of the UK will now sit up and take notice of a genuinely good team built by O'Neill. Roll on the return leg.
Tony Queen, England

The team which will see the English teams go down this year is Real Madrid. They were one of the most solid teams last season and have just made a sound investment in Zinedine Zidane. The only British team that could realistically challenge them this year is Man Utd, as they are the strongest and most talened team of the lot. Real Madrid are looking to go all the way this year and win La Liga and the Champions League, and they can do it!
Katy Doyle, England

I for one hope that all the british teams do well this year. I would especially like to see both Scottish sides do well, as it is about time all the money in the old firm paid dividends. All the talk about weak opposition in the SPL really is no excuse. The top English clubs only have six tough opponents to play as well. Come on Celtic and Rangers
Dave, Germany (Scotland)

Last year I went for Man Utd to be the best of the English clubs and that opinion has not changed
  Steve Carley, England
As a lifelong Liverpool fan, it is a fantastic sight to see them back in Europe's Premier competition. Whilst I believe they are on a par with some of the continent's top clubs - a point illustrated last year on the way to their UEFA cup triumph - it would be unprecedented for a team to win the Champions League on their first outing.

The sheer volume of games against quality opposition (19 to win the trophy) means that you need more than just a good squad, you need a slice of good fortune too. Whilst I believe they are now back to being one of Europe's elite clubs, Liverpool are just short of the mark at this level. A creditable quarter final slot beckons.
Ashley davies, England

Who would have thought Leeds would have progressed furthest last time around? I for one had written them off before a ball had been kicked.

Last year I went for Man Utd to be the best of the English clubs and that opinion has not changed this season. They are streets ahead of the rest in the Premiership and Ferguson wants to retire at Hampden Park with another European Cup triumph. Whether they can go all the way remains to be seen. But I think the added class of Van Nistelrooy and Veron, who has experience in the competition, might just be what United need to repeat their 1999 success

So much for all of those who said that Celtic would not beat Ajax
  Neil Reid, USA

Arsenal have added fresh faces but none can be called world-beaters. Campbell has barely played in Europe and he's 27. As for Liverpool, it's their first attempt in a long time at playing on four fronts and they will need a couple more seasons before they are ready to challenge Europe's elite. But, as they say, it's a funny old game.
Steve Carley, England

Having all three English teams proceeding to the Champions League quarter-finals last year really put English football on the map again, and I thought Rangers were unlucky not to reach the second group phase.

All five of the british teams have the strength to get to the same stage again although they will face sterner opposition from the Italians. No Italian team has reached the quarter final stage for two years running and they will definately want to correct this.
Paul Reed, United Kingdom

Well, so much for all of those who said that Celtic would not beat Ajax. We stuffed them and could have scored five or six.
Neil Reid, USA

Liverpool have the potential to go all the way this year

If Celtic could get the chance to play against decent opponents each week, maybe they'd stand a better chance in the Champions League.
Greg, Australia

We may be in for an all-round surprise this season. Much talk about the likes of my favourites, Man Utd, and other European football powerhouses such as Real and Liverpool but what about having a different winner for a change? Panathinaikos for instance, with a host of stars such as Paolo Sousa, Henricksen and Warzycha kicked out Juventus from last year's competition and were one minute away from another famous victory against Man Utd in the Athens 1-1 draw.

If they improve on their consistency, then the Athens outfit is capable of emulating and even improving on past European campaigns which led them to one final in 1971 and two semi-finals in 1985 and 1996. Their recent switch from the vast 75,000 Athens Olympic Stadium, to their Lion's Den, a 16,000 down town stadium in the Greek capital may pose a challenge for any visitor. Juve have suffered one of their heaviest losses in this stadium (4-2) and the Greek national side enjoyed its finest moment there when they beat the then!
george, Dubai

Liverpool have the potential to go all the way this year. They've got a better squad than Leeds who made the semis last year. They'll be underestimated even though they won the treble, which could prove to be the downfall of the Real Madrid's and Juve's.
Joe Mather, Papua New Guinea

As a massive Liverpool fan this must be our year. It's about time the Mighty Reds ruled Europe again with king Gerrard at the helm. We will be watching the Red Army sweep aside Real and Man Utd and claim the trophy that is rightly ours. All you red shirted fans around the world unite!
