Name your GB football team
Name your GB football team
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has called for Great Britain to field a united football team at future Olympic games.

But who from the home nations would you like to see in the side?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Britain's Olympic chief Simon Clegg has revealed he and FA counterpart Adam Crozier have discussed the matter.

Although Fifa have said they will not oppose such a move, the FA have issued a statement saying that the plan is not under consideration.

According to Clegg, the home nations would be able to compete as one at the Olympics but continue on their own in the World Cup and European Championships.

Do you think it would be a good idea?

And, with only three players over the age of 23 allowed, who would make the starting line-up for your GB XI.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Please let's not have a GB team - it would just make the Scots even more bitter.
Robert, England

Robinson (Leeds), Ball (Everton), Terry (Chelsea), Brown (Man U), Cole Ars), Pennant (Ars), Ferguson (Rangers), Cole (West Ham), Giggs (Man Utd), Healy (Preston), Miller (Rangers),
Steve Penry, England

Martyn, Carr, Ferdinand, Campbell, Harte, Giggs, R Keane, Beckham, Gerrard, Owen, Fowler!
Kevin Philpott, England

Nicky Weaver, Lee Naylor, Gary Neville,Titus Bramble, Matthew Upson, Ryan Giggs, Joe Cole, Barry Ferguson, Michael Carrick, Michael Owen, Carl Cort.
Andy Marczak, UK

Those suggesting that Giggs would be the only non-English player obviously don't know as much about football as they think they do
  Ryan, Englishman in Scotland
Since when have Roy Keane and Steven Carr been British? Sheesh!
Steve Cartwright, England

Do the English really believe that, with the exception of Giggs, they have the best players in each position. Scholes and Owen are the only players that would get near a British XI.
Gordon, Scotland

Robinson (Leeds), Neville G (MU), Campbell (Ars), Ferdinand R (Leeds), Cole Ashley (Ars), Beckham (MU), Gerrard (Liv), Lambert (Celtic), Giggs (MU), Smith (Leeds), Owen (Liv)
Rhys Jaggar, England

A British team in the Olympics is a great idea. Giving the best young players from all four home countries the chance to play at that level would benefit everyone. Those suggesting that Giggs would be the only non-English player obviously don't know as much about football as they think they do.
Ryan, Englishman in Scotland

Why don't we bring back the home internationals every four years, with the winning country going on to represent the whole of the UK at the Olympic Games?
  Tommy Hughes, Scotsman in England

Fielding a GB Olympic Games team would be the perfect opportunity to progress the development of the best young players in each of the four nations. If each country submits their five best U21 or U18 players, that would give us a good panel from which to choose. Nobody would expect them to win, hence little pressure, but if a few were to shine then the only outcome would be good! It's the only way to catch up with other countries - Argentina & Brazil's Olympic teams always consist of their best young players who eventually go on to greater things.
Geoff, Northern Ireland

The suggestion that a British squad would be England plus Giggs is not true anymore. There is talent emerging in the other home nations. Barry Ferguson is a prime example and is as good as Gerrard, having been scouted by Serie A clubs since Rangers beat Parma. There is also Neil Lennon, Neil Sullivan, Callum Davidson and Paul Lambert.

Also, the choices of home-based managers will vastly be expanded, although with the appointment of Eriksson, this isn't really an issue anymore as foreign coaching has semed to have worked. Of course, most players will inevitably be chosen from the England squad, it's a case of proportional representation. It has worked for the British Lions, who are successful, and well supported, without destroying inter nation rivalry within Britain.
Chief, England

I would go the other way and have separate England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland Olympic squads
  Steve, England

In principle this is a good idea. However, I am afraid that it will go the same way as the British Lions - about half the team will be made up of English players and the remaining places will be split between the others.
J Black, uk

Our Olympic athletes struggle to get the publicity for sponsorship as it is. What chance would they get with the likes of Beckham, Giggs and Owen stealing the limelight? However, it would be good to see an U21 or U18 side gain vital experience.
Martin, England

I would go the other way and have separate England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland Olympic squads. Does sort out a lot of problems doesn't it?
Steve, England

Why don't we bring back the home internationals every four years, with the winning country going on to represent the whole of the UK at the Olympic Games? They would then still clearly be England, or Scotland etc. whilst representing the UK as a whole.
Tommy Hughes, Scotsman in England

The GB team would probably be the England team with the inclusion of Ryan Giggs on the left
  Murph, Saudi Arabia
Many have followed the progress of the Lions throughout the last few weeks, but all know that they will return and be prepared to face each other in the six Nations next spring. There are no worries about losing their independece so why should there be with football? There is no reason why a UK team shouldn't go to the Olympics, or even go on tour every few seasons.
Chris Bond, UK

I can't see a UK team ever realistically happening for a number of reasons. Firstly, despite the understandable irritation that this comment will provoke, English players probably would make up the bulk of the team, leaving the other countries under-represented. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, there is a lot of 'friendly rivalry' between the UK countries (ie. everyone else hates England). This makes it very unlikely that Scottish or Welsh fans would support a half-English, often English-based team.
Richard, England

The Olympics frequently take place after the football season has started. Does anyone honestly believe that the clubs would stand for their top players disappearing for up to a month to take part in what is (from football's perspective) a Mickey Mouse competition? There might just be a GB women's team entered one day, but a men's Olympic team is a complete non-starter.
Alan McLachlan, UK

The GB team would probably be the England team with the inclusion of Ryan Giggs on the left. None of the other National sides have the strength to compete with England.
Murph, Saudi Arabia

Players should have the chance to play for GB in the Olympics - it would be an awesome team

  Steve Jordan, England

We need to send a football team to the Olympics. Brazil have always taken this tournament seriously and used the event to give experience to their younger players. This experience has been missed by generations of our top players whose development has been stifled.
Malcolm, England

What hope is there for a GB football team if yet again we hear comments like "just pick the England squad plus Giggs!". This typical blinkered and biased viewpoint from our "friends" in In-Ger-Lund makes me sick! And to say... "suppose they could pick the manager and support staff from the other countries," oh, well thank you kind sir! Tell you what, why don't you have the Tartan Army because they're the best fans, etc...
Kerr, Scotland

If they do put a team in it should be a mix of all the countries U21 players, with a couple of experienced campaigners in there: Kirkland, Neville, Terry, Ball, Harley, Prutton, Hargreaves, Bowyer, Giggs(c), Christie and Healy.
Ian, England

One of Jacques Rogge's initial comments was that he wished to make the Games smaller and more competative for the less rich countries. Dropping football as an Olympic sport could go a long way to achieving this. The World Cup, European Championship, African Championships and Copa America should be enough. Professional football is not, in my opinion, the epitomy of an Olympic sport.
Richard Lynde, Turkey

A GB football team should remain what it currently is - a fascinating conversation piece with a million permutations to be argued about over a beer or two.
  John Masters, UK

Why shouldn't we have a GB team? There's always a lot of press about players playing too many games and not enough summer rest but that's what large squads are for. If the majority of players are to be under 23 they should be fit enough to play extra games. There's no problem when it comes to the World Cup or European Championships is there? Players should want to play and have the chance to play for GB in the Olympics - it would be an awesome team.
Steve Jordan, England

It would be a great idea to have a GB team at the Olympic Games. If we can have a team made up of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales players representing GB in rugby - why can't we in football? The British Lions team and tour doesn't deflect from the individual countries teams performances now, does it!
Geri, United Arab Emirates

Not a good idea - the Olympic football tournament. Like the tennis competition, it has become debased and meaningless since they relaxed the rules on admissability of professionals. A GB football team should remain what it currently is - a fascinating conversation piece with a million permutations to be argued about over a beer or two.
John Masters, UK

Will this idea really get that much support? If we are going to have a realistic chance of being competitive it'll have to be an England XI plus Ryan Giggs - to give him the global stage his talent deserves.

I suppose they could pick the manager and support staff from the other countries because I don't see that they will have anything to offer in terms of players.
Mark, England
