Who is your Player of the Year?

Teddy Sheringham has been voted player of the year by both the Football Writers' association and the Professional Footballers' association.

The 35-year-old beat off competition from Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Thierry Henry, Emile Heskey and Marcus Stewart.

Should Arsenal's Patrick Vieira have made the list? And what about Ipswich town's Marcus Stewart?

The Young Player of the Year award went to Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard. Was he the right choice? What other young stars have shone this season?

Who is your player of the year?

HAVE YOUR SAY

  PFA Nominations:
Player of the Year:
Roy Keane
Teddy Sheringham
Ryan Giggs (all Man Utd)
Thierry Henry (Arsenal)
Emile Heskey (Liverpool)
Marcus Stewart (Ipswich)
Young Player of the Year:
Emile Heskey
Steven Gerrard (both Liverpool)
Wes Brown (Man Utd)
Alan Smith (Leeds)
Michael Carrick
Joe Cole (both West Ham)

The veteran hit-man Sheringham has fired in goal after goal for the champions this season and is enjoying something of a comeback towards the end of his career.

Old Trafford had two other candidates for the PFA award, Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane.

Thierry Henry, Emile Heskey and Ipswich revelation Marcus Stewart also found themselves on the elite list, but Sheringham beat them all.

Not surprisingly, Steven Gerrard got the nod on the Young Player of the Year front - should the gifted Liverpool man have been included on the full list?

And where is Ashley Cole - he of the meteoric rise to full England recognition?

Who is your player of the year - and why?

Tell us what you think.

The fact that almost every contribution on this page names a different player suggests that no one has been outstanding enough to win it. That would be my vote - no 'Player of the Year'. It was a poor season where Manchester United only needed to play ordinarily to win the league by an absolute mile.
Robert Chaundy, Germany

I'd have voted for Vieira, Gerrard, Hyypia, Barthez or Matt Holland but none are nominated!
  Jon Yates, Liverpool, UK
I don't understand it really. I'd have voted for Vieira, Gerrard, Hyypia, Barthez or Matt Holland but none are nominated! Gerrard should coast to the young player award, he's an outstanding player, what a season.
Jon Yates, Liverpool, UK

Teddy Sheringham is a solid professional who doesn't make many mistakes. Given the service of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes and Keane - far and away the best midfield in the country- he can't help but score goals. Every few games Ferguson lets him have a rest. Give the award to someone who has worked for it, like Steven Gerrard or Marcus Stewart.
Dave Tomkinson, Italy

I agree Sheringham has been outstanding and that's coming from an ardent Liverpool supporter, but I would say the performance at the back of Sami Hyppia and Stefan Henchoz has been remarkable. Personally I don't think Fowler and Owen are back at their best yet, but my vote would go to Jamie Carragher, ever present and becoming a superb wing back.
Tinku, England

Sami Hyypia
Sami Hyypia: The Liverpool skipper was a surprise omission
I was very surprised to see that Kieron Dyer had not been included in the young player of the year category has he has had an outstanding season for Newcastle, playing anywhere from defence to fill-in striker.
Simon, Britain

How long is it going to take until players from teams other than Man Utd start getting some recognition? To give the PFA award to Sheringham would be a disgrace after performances this season by the likes of Sami Hyppia at Liverpool and Mark Viduka at Leeds. I hope the players decide upon a more worthy recipient than one who merely wears a Man Utd shirt.
Richard, Australia

Sheringham did play well this year, although I must say that he played excellently only for the first half of the season. My vote probably goes to Hasselbaink, who is an outstanding player. Vieira was also awesome. Why was Beckham mentioned though?
Shayan Javed, England

While Sheringham has been in fantastic form this season, it is clear he has been chosen for his goalscoring exploits. As this is the case, should Marcus Stewart not win the award as he has scored more league goals without the services of the likes of Beckham, Giggs and Scholes? However what about giving defences some credit? Barthez and Hyypia were my shouts.
Mark MacGinty, Ireland

If Lee Bowyer a) had not been involved in the court case, or b) played for either Manchester United, Arsenal Or Liverpool then he would have walked away with the title for the simple reason that he has put in 30+ brilliant league performances. Good to see Giggs get some recognition though.
Eden Knight, England

Ipswich's Marcus Stewart
"What more does Marcus Stewart have to do?"
If anyone had watched Teddy at Millwall from 1988 to 1991 they would have known they were watching a tremendous player. His confidence was sky high at Millwall and he was just so cocky trying all sorts of clever stuff. The confidence seemed to drop a bit when he moved to the bigger clubs. But I'll never forget some of the stuff he used to do down at The Den. Superb player who deserves all the attention, however late it is. I remember when some commentators used to call him Terry. None of them will make that mistake again.
Mark, Poland

I must say Teddy's done a great job. I'm very surprised not to see Patrick Vieira's name amongst the nominees. Henry and Vieira are the only reason Arsenal are just 16 points behind Man Utd and not more!
Craig, France

There has been no better player in the Premiership this year than Lee Bowyer. The court case should not have stopped him being nominated.
Di, UK

What does Lee Bowyer have to do to win the award? I am sure Iain from Scotland is an SPL fan. The Premiership is not such a bad league and will be a closer run thing next season. Watch out for Liverpool, Leeds and Chelsea challenging a transitional Man Utd team.
Damian Gavaghan, British in California

Steven Gerrard is the most exciting young player seen on English pitches for a long while
  James, Amsterdam, Holland
Although I think Vieira and Bowyer should feel aggrieved about not being short-listed, the award has to go to Roy Keane. Combative, scores, creates and stops goals, and above all, a leader of men. Manchester United would not be the same without him. As for the youngsters, Gerrard just ahead of Smith.
Nathan D Fossey, England

Sheringham has had a great season, but for me Sami Hyypia has been just outstanding. I'm surprised he has been overlooked. Every time I see him play he impresses me more and more. His displays in the UEFA Cup this season along with Henchoz, Carragher and Babbel in the Liverpool defence makes him my player of the year.
John, England

Marcus Stewart has been tremendous this season. He may not be the quickest player on the field but he's sharp and unselfish and can take a good penalty. He gets my vote for player of the year.
Matt, England

For me - Marcus Stewart. Just look at how consistent he has been all season. In one season Ipswich have come from division one to a possible champions league place. With due credit to the manager and the team as a whole, without doubt Stewart has been the pivotal player for Ipswich.
David Toubian, London, England

I don't think there has been one outstanding player this year, just outstanding team play (Ipswich for example). Maybe this heralds a new phase for English football - teams instead of individuals. If I had to give the player of the year to anybody it would be Sami Hyypia because without him Liverpool would not have achieved so much.
Jack Jacovides, England

I believe for sheer improvement in his all around game and the way he has adapted himself to become a top quality striker Emile Heskey is a must for player of the year. Not too many defenders get the better of him and he can only get better.
Andy Morris, England
