Sport Relief raises £10 million
The first-ever Sport Relief has raised a phenomenal £10,072,068 to help children in the UK and around the world. Stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment joined together to make sure that it was a night to remember as BBC One gave over its schedule to the event. There were many highlights, but the return of Superstars and a boxing match between comedians Bob Mortimer and Les Dennis stood out. England rugby union international Austin Healey became the new Superstars champion as he proved himself the best athlete over a number of disciplines. Split decision The winger beat off competition from the likes of Olympic gold medallists Sir Steven Redgrave, Stephanie Cook and Chris Boardman. And in the light-entertainment boxing championship Mortimer won a split decision over Dennis. By 2240BST there had already been over 180,000 calls to donate money and it is not too late to contribute. People from around the country have been raising money for months and there is still a major event to come. On 18 July Sotherby's is holding an auction to push the total even higher. Among the items on offer are Michael Owen's Jaguar, the late Ayrton Senna's racing suit and Sven-Goran Eriksson's top-of-the range Volvo. It should an exciting addition to what has already proved to be a huge success. |
