Cricketers plan fine time
Nigel Walker leads the nets session
The BBC Wales Sport team gets practicing
BBC Wales sports department is putting its best bat forward to help raise money for Sport Relief with a charity cricket match.

The likes of former Wales rugby wing Nigel Walker - now BBC Wales' head of sport - will don his pads for the BBC team on Wednesday 10 July.

They will be challenging a Christians in Sport XI led by Glamorgan County Cricket Club's director of development Mark Frost in a limited overs match at St Fagan's cricket club, Cardiff.

The Christians XI also have a former Wales rugby star of their own in Adrian Davies, now the director of rugby at London Welsh.

Both sides will be under the watchful gaze of Wales Today sports correspondent Bob Humphrys, who will be keeping order as one of the umpires.

To raise cash for the charity, each player will pay to play and also collect sponsorship for the number of runs scored and wickets taken.

Climb Everest

After the match the umpires will also hand out fines, to be added to the charity pot, for both misdemeanours and brilliance in the field.

Judging from the rusty reaquaintance with the noble game at a nets practice at Glamorgan's headquarters in Sophia Gardens, the BBC Wales players could find it an expensive evening.

Dropped catches, wides, no-balls and 'air' shots are likely to be punished heavily when the jury convenes after the match.

Everyone is welcome to attend the match, which is scheduled to start at 6pm.

The Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff will also be doing their bit on Friday 12 July with a 'Climb Everest' Challenge.

A collection of step machines will be set up in the reception area of the Welsh Institute of Sport.

Staff, sporting celebrities and the public will join in the challenge to climb the height of Mount Everest on the steppers and donate to Sport Relief in the process.
