Katie Still presents Sports Weekly every Saturday with John Beattie
|
BBC Radio Scotland's Sports Weekly presenter Katie Still picks her sporting highlight of the week and picks out the events to watch out for in Scotland in the next seven days.
It's been quite a build up for the Ryder Cup hasn't it?
These last few weeks, the sports news has been littered with accusations that Nick Faldo is a control freak, fuelled by his apparent need for only one helper - Jose Maria Olazabal, and he has been criticised for picking players who commit more to the US PGA tour.
And then of course from a Scottish point of view, there is the absence of a Scottish player for the first time since 1937. But it's worth bearing in mind that before 1979, when the US faced only Great Britain & Ireland, it was easier for Scots to make the team.
Reading all the fall outs and criticisms of the team selection it dawned on me that this is a sport that is unaccustomed to picking teams on a regular basis.
Golf is more often than not an individual sport, and when it suddenly becomes a matter of choosing the best team for Europe, that's never going to be plain sailing!
As a hockey player, selection can be a very stressful thing - I nearly fainted on the pitch as a teenager as the pressure to make the Scottish team mounted!
Of course making the Ryder Cup team is not the be all and end all of a golfer's career - unlike conventional team sports, where making the team is the first most important step.
So I will be keen to watch how this year's Ryder Cup will unfold in Valhalla, where 2 teams of the best golfers (minus Tiger Woods) in the world compete - here's hoping Europe can bring home the trophy for the 4th successive year.
