Bayern captain Paul Breitner (left) poses with his Dons counterpart Willie Miller before the big kick-off at Pittodrie
Bayern's Klaus Augenthaler grabbed a crucial away goal after only 10 minutes to leave the Dons with a mountain to climb
Bayern boasted the cream of the German national team in their ranks - Augenthaler, Breitner and star striker Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
But this Aberdeen side had a never-say-die attitude and equalised through Neil Simpson (right) before half-time
The Scots had secured a terrific goalless draw in the first leg in Munich and Simpson's strike put them right back in the tie
The determined Dons (Gordon Strachan and Willie Miller shown here) worked hard to thwart the Germans' precise passing but Hans Pfugler put Bayern 2-1 up on the hour
Still Sir Alex Ferguson's men refused to buckle and Alex McLeish equalised for the second time after 76 minutes
But with Bayern ahead on away goals, Aberdeen needed a winner to go through to the semi-finals of the competition
And a minute later, with the Pittodrie crowd still buzzing, super-sub John Hewitt popped up to make it 3-2 to Aberdeen
The mighty Bayern were left shellshocked and incredulous as Aberdeen completed a stirring comeback against the odds
And the Aberdeen players took a well-deserved bow in front of their supporters after an unforgettable European night
Sir Alex Ferguson's heroes went on to lift the trophy that season, beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the final in Gothenburg - and that man Hewitt struck again with a last-gasp winner!
