Scott Walker's transfer saga finally reached a conclusion after he and St Mirren agreed that he could now move to Dunfermline Athletic.

The solution appears to have arrived in the shape of Greig Denham, who St Mirren signed after the defender was released by Falkirk.

Denham said: "There were a couple of clubs interested in me, but as soon as Tom Hendrie knew I was available he convinced me to join."

Fellow central defender Jamie McGowan also re-signed for St Mirren.

The solution was reached just in time for Walker to join his new club on their pre-season trip to New Zealand.

Dunfermline had announced on Tuesday that Walker had signed a two-year deal.

St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour insisted that the 27-year-old was still a Buddie two days later.

But the Paisley club announced on their website on Friday: "Scott Walker and the club have today agreed terms for his departure, which means that Scott is now a Dunfermline player.

"Scott is now free to join his new club for their pre-season tour, which begins on Sunday."

Walker's move back to the Scottish Premier League hit a snag when the First Division club refused to accept the proposed method of payment.

The defender proposed to buy out the year left on his Saints contract.

He wanted to pay by instalments, but St Mirren insisted that they would only accept such payments if they came direct from the Fife club.

Dunfermline had originally become interested in signing Walker because they believed he was being allowed to leave St Mirren for free as Gilmour attempted to slash the wage bill at the debt-struck club.

When St Mirren demanded £25,000 for the player, Pars boss Jimmy Calderwood stressed that his club was determined not to pay any money for the player.
