Boroughmuir have won the Tilney Melrose Sevens with a 38-5 win over the Scottish Thistles in the final.

The Edinburgh side were too good for the Thistles who had done exceptionally to reach the final having only come together as a team a week previously.

Mike Blair of Boroughmuir was the star man, winning the player of the tournament award with a series of fine displays.

He helped Muir to victories over Uruguay in the quarter finals and defending champions Barbarians in the semis.

The win will go some way to easing the pain of missing out on the BT Premiership title after Hawick pipped them to the league championship.

The tournament also marked the last ever BBC commentary by 'The Voice of Rugby', Bill McLaren.

Sponsors Tilney Investment Management presented McLaren with a 30-year-old bottle of Macallan Whisky to commemorate his final broadcast.

"It is great to finish my career at the Greenyards," he said later.

"The Melrose club put on an amazing event here and the standard of rugby is superb.

"I've been coming here since I was a boy in the 1930s and enjoyed every minute of it".
