Peter Hetherston has resigned as manager of First Division side Raith Rovers.

BBC Scotland understands that the former Aberdeen and Falkirk player tendered his resignation at a board meeting which was accepted.

Hetherston's decision to resign followed earlier talks wtih Rovers chairman Danny Smith.

Rovers are currently five points adrift of Ross County at the foot of the First Division table following Saturday's 3-1 defeat by the Highlanders at Stark's Park.

The 37-year-old admitted after the game that it was understandable that fans were calling for his sacking.

Hetherston was in his third year with the Kirkcaldy club but was out of contract at the end of the season and had previously threatened to quit.
