Stranraer claimed the scalp of First Division leaders Ayr with a thrilling Challenge Cup victory at Stair Park.

John Bradford had given Ayr the lead in the local derby before Stranraer struck back through Kevin Finlayson, Ian Harty and Fraser Wright.

Pat McGinlay got one back for the visitors, but it was not enough to prevent the Second Division side ending Ayr's run of eight straight wins in meetings between the clubs.

Ayr took only seven minutes to take the lead and dictated so much of the play after Bradford's opener that Stranraer's prospects looked bleak.

Gallant fightback

Former Queen's Park striker Finlayson equalised after 36 minutes when Ayr skipper John Hughes left goalkeeper Craig Nelson with no chance following a suicidal back-pass.

The visitors still looked the livelier side, but a two-minute spell after the break ruined their cup dreams.

Second Division Stranraer never looked back after those strikes from Harty and Wright.

Ayr recovered and mounted a gallant fightback after McGinlay scored with eight minutes left.

But it was too little, too late as Stranraer took their place in Wednesday's quarter-final draw.
