Wales were desperate for revenge after a pool loss to South Africa
|
Wales Women finished ninth in the World Cup with a comprehensive revenge win over South Africa at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. South Africa beat Wales 15-10 in the pool stages, but Wales led 17-0 at the break in the rematch thanks to tries from Naomi Thomas (2) and Mared Evans. Evans added a second and Rhian Bowden touched down in the second period. South Africa's tries came from Zenay Jordaan, Charmaine Kayser and Phumeza Gadu, all of them after the break. "It's obviously great to finish the tournament off with a bang," said Wales coach Jason Lewis. "It's just a pity we couldn't have shown that sort of composure in the group stages against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. "We had to be patient against South Africa, but the girls did well to hold them off and thoroughly deserve to finish the tournament off with a win."
