Jamie Roberts confident of early return from injury

Cardiff Blues and Wales centre Jamie Roberts says he hopes to return from wrist surgery ahead of schedule.

The 2009 British and Irish Lions man of the series was told by his surgeon that he would be out for a minimum of five months after the operation.

That would keep him out until Christmas and he seems certain to miss the autumn Tests and the opening European rounds.

"I hope to knock [the return date] down by a month or two," 23-year-old Roberts told BBC Sport Wales.

"We'll see, it all depends on how the hand is and the grip strength.

"It's not too bad, I have the cast off [on 2 September] then it's on to the rehab.

"Fingers crossed, I'll be back as soon as possible."

Roberts played both games in Wales' two-Test tour of New Zealand last month, taking him to 24 Wales caps.

He impressed hugely in the 29-10 second-Test loss, scoring Wales' first try against the All Blacks since 2006.

But after that he revealed that he needed the operation to cure the long-standing hand problem.

"I injured my wrist during the second [Lions] Test in South Africa last year," said Roberts.

"I had a couple of MRI scans which unfortunately didn't pick up the injury and it wasn't until the surgeon had a look with a camera into the joint at the end of the season that the full extent of the injury was diagnosed.

"I played all of last season with a lot of pain in my wrist.

"It's pretty disappointing to be missing more or less the first half of the season, but I will certainly use the time whilst injured to rid my body of any niggles I have and come back to the field in good knick and aim to lift more silverware with the Blues."

Roberts made his competitive debut for the Blues on the wing against the Ospreys in 2007, and has also featured at full-back.

In just two seasons, he has cemented his place in the Wales team and become one of the most exciting centres in world rugby.
