Dragons back-row Joe Bearman fears long injury lay-off

Dragons back-row Joe Bearman could miss the rest of the season through injury.

Bearman had been tipped to earn a first Wales call-up in the November Tests but a groin injury spoiled his chances.

The 30-year-old had hoped to stake his Wales claim once more for the Six Nations, but has now suffered a serious tear to his adductor muscle.

"It looks as though I've ripped the muscle away. I've got no idea when I'll be able to play again," Bearman told the South Wales Argus.

If Bearman requires surgery rather than extended rest to rectify the problem it could end his involvement this season.

The former Cornish Pirates player, who qualified for Wales on residency last summer, has been a leading light for the Dragons.

His absence - both as a player and as an on-field leader - is a major blow to the Gwent region.

The Dragons had been riding high in the Magners League before the Christmas period, but suffered disappointing defeats to Welsh rivals Cardiff Blues and the Scarlets.

Bearman's absence will also be sorely felt in the Dragons' two remaining Heineken Cup pool matches in January, away to Glasgow and then home to Gloucester.
