Dwayne Peel
Peel, 28, is out for a month

Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel has been ruled out of the remainder of the Six Nations because of a torn hamstring.

Peel, expected to be sidelined for a month, is replaced in the starting XV to face Italy in Rome on Saturday by Ospreys number nine Mike Phillips.

London Irish scrum-half Warren Fury will provide cover on the bench.

Peel, who has only started one Test during the reign of Wales head coach Warren Gatland, suffered the injury playing for Sale against Newcastle.

Phillips was moved to the replacements' bench for the Six Nations trip to the Stadio Flaminio as one of 10 changes made by Gatland in the wake of their defeat in France.

Fury, who joined the squad for training on Monday, won two caps as a replacement during the tour of South Africa last summer.

Peel joins fellow scrum-halves Gareth Cooper and Martin Roberts on the unavailable list.

Gloucester's Cooper is still sidelined with a knee injury and Roberts, who has been training with the Wales squad, suffered a rib injury in the Scarlets' Magners League win over Edinburgh on Sunday.

Roberts has been ruled out of the trip to face the Azzurri, but his fitness will be judged again next week with a view to being in contention to face Ireland at the Millennium Stadium the following weekend.

"Martin has not been able to take a full part in training this week, but will be re-assessed early next week," said Wales physio Mark Davies.

"Dwayne will be out for a minimum of four weeks after a scan revealed a tear to his hamstring and we all wish him a speedy recovery."
