Wales Under-20 had to settle for fourth place at the IRB Junior World Championship after being outclassed by South Africa on Sunday in Swansea.

South Africa led 26-6 at half-time with tries from Francois Brummer, Robert Ebersohn, Lionel Mapoe and Nick Koster.

An excellent Leigh Halfpenny try plus another from Sam Hobbs gave Wales hope.

But South Africa stretched away as Frederick Kirsten barged over, wing flyer Mapoe claimed his second score and Sias Ebersohn finished things off.

Wales wing Halfpenny opened the scoring at the Liberty Stadium with an early penalty, but their lead was short-lived.

South Africa used an overlap on the right well, putting the ball through several sets of hands to send Brummer over, although the tournament's leading scorer failed to convert his own try.

Brummer made no mistake with his next attempt, as his fellow centre Robert Ebersohn was sent clear after thrilling interplay from full-back Wilton Pietersen and wing Cecil Afrika.

Halfpenny added his second kick to trim South Africa's lead to 12-6 after 24 minutes.

But Robert Ebersohn's clean break ushered Mapoe to the line before Koster went under the posts before the break, Brummer converting both.

Wales hit back after half-time as a fine pass back inside from Jonathan Davies allowed Halfpenny to break through, then a line-out catch and drive shoved Hobbs over.

That brought Wales back to 18-26 down, only for South Africa to stretch away again.

Brummer was stopped just short of the Welsh line but managed to get his pass away for replacement prop Kirsten - all 18 stone and 6ft 4in of him - to muscle over from two metres.

The South African back play proved too much for the creaking Wales defence and Mapoe claimed his second try.

Flanker Thiliphaut Marole's break took out two Wales defenders to send Sias Ebersohn clear, the fly-half adding a gloss to the final score and matching his brother Robert on the score-sheet.
