Williams cool on Wales captaincy
Martyn Williams
Williams turned down the Wales captaincy in 2003
Lions, Wales and Cardiff Blues flanker Martyn Williams does not feel he is in the running to lead his country.

The hugely experienced 30-year-old, who turned down the captaincy before the 2003 World Cup, says he would relish the chance if it came along.

But he feels that Stephen Jones, Gareth Thomas, Duncan Jones and Michael Owen are the leading contenders for the job.

"You never say never, but I'm just concentrating on getting back in the side," said the 62-cap Pontypridd man.

"The four people being talked about for the captaincy are all worthy candidates and would have the full backing of the squad.

"We are such a close side that we will get behind the successful candidate.

"People keep asking me if I have any regrets about saying 'no' to the job a few years ago, but history has proved it was the best decision for me and the team."

Williams, who has led Wales and the Blues in the past, missed the summer tour to Argentina to concentrate on a full pre-season.

"I missed the 2004 summer tour and benefited enormously the following season," said Williams.

"When you come back from tour you are four weeks behind everyone else when you start to prepare for the next campaign."

Williams was the Six Nations player of the tournament in Wales' 2005 Grand Slam season.
