Monty extends Dragons deal
Percy Montgomery
South Africa's record points scorer Percy Montgomery has signed a new three year contract with the Dragons.

The 30-year-old initially signed a two-year deal back with Newport in 2002, but has now pledged his future to the Gwent regional side until 2007.

"This is great news for the players and fans because Percy has become a bit of a talisman for the team," said chief executive Andy Marinos.

"His commitment to the Dragons' cause has been fantastic."

Montgomery's international career looked to be over when he decided to turn his back on his homeland in favour of a lucrative contract in Wales.

And his whole rugby future was on the line last year when he was found guilty of assaulting a match official in a Welsh Premier match.

He escaped a possible life ban, but was handed a two-year ban - 18 months of which were suspended.

Montgomery returned to action in December 2003 for the newly formed Dragons regional side, and produced a string of match winning performances for the remainder of the season.

Those displayed did not go unnoticed in South Africa, and new Springbok coach Jake White welcomed him back to the national squad in May.

He scored 16 points on his first game back in a South Africa jersey against Ireland in June, and has since added a further 42 points in the three more Tests to become his country's top scorer on 319 points.

Meanwhile, the Dragons have appointed Jason Forster as their new captain.

The 33-year-old flanker, who won his first Wales cap against Argentina in June, played in all Celtic League games and missed just one Heineken Cup game last season.
