Gwent give up on Tonu'u
Ofisa Tonu'u
Tonu'u failed to turn up for pre-season training with the Dragons
Gwent Dragons have completed the signing of ex-Pontypridd scrum-half Gareth Baber after conceding that Ofisa Tonu'u will not be returning to Wales.

Former All Black scrum-half Tonu'u made a big impression at Rodney Parade during his two years with Newport, but failed to turn up for pre-season training and is thought to be seeking a contract in New Zealand.

Gwent are also in talks with an English-based international back-row forward after the departure of Wales A youngster Andy Powell to Beziers.

And USA centre Phil Eloff could be a target if talks with Springbok Robbie Fleck fail to bear fruit.

The 24-year-old South African-born player has won 22 caps for the Eagles in the last four years.

Gwent chief executive David Jenkins has promised that season ticket prices for the regional side will be lower than those charged by Newport last season.

Unlike the new Neath-Swansea side, Gwent has been unable to combine tickets with those offered by the semi-professional club team after a bitter dispute delayed the agreement for the Dragons to use Rodney Parade until last week.

  • Llanelli have completed the signing of Newport scrum-half Dale Burn on a one-year contract.

The Scarlets are also set to secure the services of hooker Rhys Williams from Leicester.
