Running with the ball

The dummy pass

At its best, a dummy can unlock the tightest of defences.

You must fool your opponent into believing you are actually about to make the pass.

So don't over-use the dummy pass - or the opposition will work out your plan.

STEP ONE

The dummy pass

Run towards the defender holding the ball in both hands.

Look towards the person to whom you are feigning the pass and make the passing motion.

But at the last moment, drop your shoulders, slam on the brakes and do not release the ball.

Timing is important if you are going to sell the dummy pass to the defender.

STEP TWO

The dummy pass

The defender will be drawn to your team-mate - the target of the intended "pass".

Take advantage of this momentary opportunity by drawing the ball back into your chest and accelerate off the leg you were passing across.

STEP THREE

The dummy pass

Sprint into the space you have just created.

Keep looking around for any players in support who are in a better position than you are.
