Vernon replaces the injured Scott McLeod
Scotland head coach Andy Robinson has made one enforced change to the starting XV for Saturday's third autumn Test with Samoa at Pittodrie.
Edinburgh second row Scott MacLeod is out with a rib injury so Richie Vernon will step in at number eight.
Nathan Hines moves to the second row and loose-head prop Allan Jacobsen has been declared fit to win his 50th cap.
Toulouse's Census Johnston comes in at tight-head prop for Samoa in place of Anthony Perenise.
Mike Blair returns on the bench for Scotland after missing out on Saturday's 21-17 victory against South Africa, while Sean Lamont, who is also making his 50th appearance, is retained on the wing.
Edinburgh prop Jacobsen has shaken off a shoulder problem sustained in the battling win over the Springboks.
"Allan has performed really well for Scotland over the years," said Robinson.
"He always gives 100%, performs at his very best every time he gets the blue shirt on and I've been delighted with his attitude.
"He performs at incredibly high levels and for him to be able to do that in the scrum, to the way he contributes around the pitch, is absolutely fantastic.
"Sean's had a number of injuries through his career and he's always bounced back well and I'm delighted with the way he's been playing for the Scarlets and the way he's been performing for Scotland."
There is one change among the replacements for Samoa, with Bordeaux flanker Daniel Leo named on the bench in place of George Williams, who is injured.
Samoa are seeking to end their tour on a high after following up a 21-10 defeat by Ireland with a 21-16 loss against England.
The visitors were met with snowfall at their training session in Aberdeen on Wednesday, with some members of the touring party seeing snow for the first time.
But the Pacific islanders are more than happy to play in Aberdeen, rather than in Edinburgh at Murrayfield.
"It's a very good opportunity for us," added head coach Fuimaono Tafua.
