Thompson named in Scotland squad for Argentina tour

Robinson aims to build on recent good performances

Andy Robinson has included uncapped Jim Thompson in his Scotland squad for next month's tour of Argentina.

The Edinburgh back is the only player in the 27-man squad yet to feature for his country, as Robinson adds five men to the 22 who beat Ireland in March.

Leinster lock Nathan Hines is not available for the matches in Tucuman and Mar Del Plata for family reasons.

Edinburgh centre Ben Cairns misses out, while Chris Paterson, Thom Evans and Rory Lamont are absent through injury.

Robinson will be able to call on Thompson's versatility, as the grandson of the late Bill McLaren can play at full-back, operate on the wing or play in midfield.

"We are really looking forward to playing against Argentina," said the Scotland head coach.

"We have a lot of respect for the way the game is played there and we want to improve upon our success in our most recent game in the Six Nations.

"As well as our two Test matches in Argentina, we will prepare for those contests with our game at Murrayfield against a Japan Select.

"In addition, there are matches against Georgia, Namibia and Argentina Jaguars for Scotland A in the IRB Nations Cup.

"So, from my perspective, we are playing six Test matches this summer and that will be reflected when we announce the Scotland A squad next week."

Robinson revealed he would consider adding a player to his squad, which could pave the way for Hines to feature after he was given compassionate leave to spend time in his native Australia helping care for his mother-in-law.

Thompson 'chuffed' at Scotland call

"He's going back to see his wife, who has been over in Australia nursing her sick mother," said Robinson.

"It's time for him to be there and if Nathan feels he can come across to Argentina at a later stage then we will leave that open for him to be able to do."

The first Test against the Pumas takes place on Saturday 12 June, with the second a week later. Both matches will be shown live on BBC Two Scotland, with radio commentary and website streaming.
