Scotland Sevens coach Stephen Gemmell under pressure

Scotland Sevens coach Stephen Gemmell expects questions to be asked of his leadership following the performance of his team in the New Zealand Sevens.

Gemmell's men lost 17-12 to Pacific Islanders Niue in the bowl quarter-final and went down 19-12 against the USA in the semi-final of the shield.

"There will be questions asked about my leadership back home, quite rightly," Gemmell told BBC Scotland.

"I'm going to have to answer them and I'm not going to make excuses for it."

Scotland beat Papua New Guinea but lost to both Australia and Fiji in Friday's Pool B fixtures in Wellington.

It's not good enough. We need to take a look at ourselves

"We're lacking real confidence, you can see that; it's spreading throughout the team," said Gemmell.

"We can't shy away from it, I'm not going to shy away from it.

"It's not good enough. We need to take a look at ourselves, starting with me and down to the players and we need to move on."

Next up on the series is the USA Sevens in Las Vegas next weekend.

"We're fortunate that we've got another tournament next weekend, but we've got a lot of hard work to do during the week," added Gemmell.
