New Scotland A role for Townsend

Former Test stars Gregor Townsend and Shade Munro will act as assistant coaches for the Scotland A team.

The pair will work under Edinburgh head coach Andy Robinson, who takes charge for the 14 November visit of Georgia.

Townsend, Scotland's third most capped player, will look after the backs and said: "I was delighted to be asked by Andy to be involved."

Munro, a forwards coach at Glasgow, has enjoyed the role before and has been involved in two Churchill Cup finals.

"I've really enjoyed the experience of working with the A team," said Munro, who won seven caps for Scotland.

"It's a special role that is entirely different to my day-to-day work with Glasgow because you have so little time to prepare a group of players that might only have met for the first time at training."

Scotland A will take on Georgia at Firhill, home to Glasgow Warriors and Partick Thistle.

Meanwhile, two former Scotland greats, Tom Smith and Craig Chalmers, will be teaming up as part of the management team for the Under-20 side, whose season will culminate with a World Cup in Japan.

Smith, who was a British and Irish Lion in South Africa in 1997 and Australia in 2001, will be an assistant coach concentrating on forward play, while Chalmers, capped 60 times, has been drafted in as part of his career development.

"I've coached at Melrose for the last three to four years and hopefully I can be an asset and help the players to progress," said Chalmers.
