Brewer says Scots need confidence

New forwards coach Mike Brewer believes Scotland have all the ingredients to be a great side.

The former All Blacks captain joined head coach Frank Hadden's new set-up last month and is keen to get working with the squad.

However, Brewer said the Scots needed more self-belief ahead of the autumn Tests following a poor Six Nations.

"If they've got confidence in themselves, they'll start winning games they're not supposed to," said Brewer.

Scotland face New Zealand at Murrayfield on 8 November and then entertain South Africa a week later before taking on Canada in Aberdeen.

Brewer, 43 said he was particularly looking forward to facing his old national side, but will be focused on setting Scotland up to go out and secure a first ever victory against the Kiwis.

"My role will be to go out and try to put Scotland in a position to win the game," said Brewer.

"I know as far as the All Blacks are motivated, the older players in the team when I was playing were saying to each other 'do you want to be in the first All Blacks side that loses to Scotland?' and it drives the players on.

"My role will be to try and make sure there's 15 or 22 guys that end up with their name on that sheet.

"I'm not saying we're going to win it, but what we will be looking for is performance.

"By the time we've comes to the end of the Canadian game, we've grown and developed, and then we can lead into the Six Nations."
