Paterson hungry for more records

Chris Paterson intends to break more records for Scotland
Paterson plans to break new records in the young Scotland side

Chris Paterson is keen to break new records playing for Scotland, rather than rest on his achievements to date.

In the first Test against Argentina, Paterson, 30, surpassed Gavin Hastings' points total of 667 in the 21-15 loss.

He won his 88th Scottish cap, beating Scott Murray's tally, in the 26-14 victory over the Pumas on Saturday.

Paterson said: "These records are a starting point. Some think that once you break a record you relax and move on - not me. I want to achieve more."

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden and his team ended their season on a high with the 12-point victory in Buenos Aires.

It helped to banish the memories of the struggle to find form at the World Cup last autumn and the RBS Six Nations, where they lost four out of five matches.

Another record within Paterson's sights is the international try record of 24, held jointly by Tony Stanger and Ian Smith.

The versatile Edinburgh back needs just two more to pull level.

After a short break I'll be raring to go again, both for Edinburgh and for Scotland.

Paterson excelled with his kicking in the Six Nations, scoring a perfect 33 penalty points, and he believes that the young Scotland side are on the up after the experience gained in Argentina.

"I'm just delighted that the season ended on a high with a great victory over Argentina," said Paterson.

"Winning away from home is difficult and winning in Argentina is even more difficult with the history and the passion that they have out there - so to do that out there with the pressure surrounding Scottish rugby was very pleasing.

"And to do that with a young squad shows that maybe these young guys bring a confidence that has been lacking."

Paterson added: "I'm delighted to see the end of the season, to be honest. It started on 4 June last year when we started preparing for the World Cup, and it has been hard both physically and mentally on everyone.

"But after a short break I'll be raring to go again, both for Edinburgh and for Scotland."
