Japan could have a side in the Super 12 series in future, according to the head of the Australian Rugby Union.
O'Neill has predicted a bright rugby future for Japan
ARU chief executive John O'Neill was so impressed by their display against Scotland he said he also planned for more top-level rugby between Japan and Australia.
He said: "Potentially we're looking at a competition below Super 12. Maybe down the track you wouldn't exclude a Japanese team being included in Super 12."
The Japanese walked away 32-11 losers to Scotland on Sunday but impressed many with their style of rugby.
"Japan showed they are here to play, and with the help of very good coaching, they play a very nice brand of rugby," added O'Neill. "The crowd really got their money's worth.
"We have a very good dialogue with Japan, a very good relationship with the Japan Rugby Union.
"We are looking at ways and means of bringing them into our competitions."
