No player has won more caps at international level than Sella, who was part of the French side for the 1987, 1991 and 1995 tournaments.
He finally stepped away from the game after the French defeated England 19-9 in the third place play-off in 1995.
At his peak, Sella was probably the most exciting runner in the world game as he side-stepped even the best defences with his glowing locks in tow.
The French centre was the very heart of his backs' attacking style, paving the way for the players around him to shine with his breaks.
His vision was equalled only perhaps by team-mate Serge Blanco and, like Blanco, he boasted aggression along with flair and finesse.
At times he would seemingly dance through and past opponents.
But he was never reluctant to join in a scrap, most famously when he sprinted across the field to smack Australian second-row forward Peter FitzSimons.
