80 mins: England win but not without a massive scare as Samoa once again confirm their status as a fine rugby nation.

74 mins: Prop Phil Vickery side-steps his way over out wide to score his first try for England after a rare incisive move. Jonny Wilkinson converts and England finally look as though they have taken control.
England 35-22 Samoa

70 mins: Iain Balshaw collects a perfect Jonny Wilkinson cross-kick and flies over for a crucial try. Wilkinson misses the conversion.
England 28-22 Samoa

65 mins: A Jonny Wilkinson drop goal edges England back in front after a sustained attack.
England 23-22 Samoa

62 mins: England concede the latest in a constant stream of penalties at the ruck and maul and Earl Va'a kicks Samoa back into the lead for the third time in the game.
England 20-22 Samoa

54 mins: Neil Back concedes a penalty and Earl Va'a nudges Samoa back to within a point.
England 20-19 Samoa

51 mins: Samoa concede a scrum five metres out. When the England pack starts to drive them back they collapse it and the referee awards a penalty try, which Jonny Wilkinson converts.
England 20-16 Samoa

50 mins: England launch a series of attacks on the Samoan line but the Pacific Islanders heroically hold out.

43 mins: England start the second half by conceding two penalties in as many minutes.

41 mins: Jonny Wilkinson gets the second half underway with England knowing they will have to improve massively if they are to down the Samoans, who were brilliant in the first half.

Half-time: Samoa take a three-point lead in at the break after a marvellous performance which has left England rocking.

The Pacific Islanders stunned England by racing into a 10-point lead after just four minutes, and although the number one-ranked team in the world has come back into the match, Samoa are well worth their lead at half-time.

39 mins: England are awarded another simple penalty and this time Jonny Wilkinson drives it through the sticks to close the gap to three points.
England 13-16 Samoa

35 mins: Samoa fall offside at a ruck to gift Jonny Wilkinson a simple penalty but astonishingly he hits the left-hand post from right in front.

33 mins: England captain Martin Johnson compounds Lawrence Dallaglio's mistake just two minutes before as he handles in a ruck right in front of the referee.

Once again Earl Va'a drills the ball between the posts as Samoa take a six-point lead.

31 mins: Samoa move back into the lead through an Earl Va'a penalty after a lapse of discipline from Lawrence Dallaglio at a ruck right in front of the posts.
England 10-13 Samoa

27 mins: England level the scores as Jonny Wilkinson kicks a penalty after Samoa fall offside at a ruck.
England 10-10 Samoa

25 mins: England finally get on the board after they win a penalty and kick it into the corner.

The entire crowd know what is coming and sure enough England claim the line out and form a rolling maul, with Neil Back burrowing over for the try.

Jonny Wilkinson converts from wide out to put England firmly back into contention.
England 7-10 Samoa

21 mins: England captain Martin Johnson concedes a penalty for offside at a ruck but Earl Va'a's kick hits a post.

19 mins: England are getting on top up front but whenever they try to move the ball they are very laboured and keep turning over possession to the dangerous Pacific Islanders.

11 mins: England win a penalty after a dominant driving maul but Jonny Wilkinson, who had yet to fail with a kick in 12 attempts at the tournament, pushes the chance wide.

4 mins: Semo Sititi finishes of a stunning move as Samoa go almost the length and full width of the pitch. Earl Va'a converts to give Samoa a handy early advantage.

2 mins: Samoa win a penalty after a sweeping attack when England fall offside, and Earl Va'a slots it to put the Pacific Island ahead.

0937: Earl Va'a gets the match underway for Samoa.
