77mins: Australia make a number of late changes. George Gregan is replaced by Chris Whitaker and rugby league legend Lote Tuqiri comes on for Joe Roff.

73mins: Veteran winger Joe Roff responds in style for Australia, stepping inside and then out to the delight of the home fans. Flatley adds the conversion.

70mins: Full-back Ignacio Corleto scorches over in the corner for Argentina to grab a brilliant and timely try for the Pumas. Contepomi misses yet again with the boot.

67mins: Mauricio Reggiardo replaces Omar Hasan in the front row for the Pumas. For Australia, George Smith is replaced by Matt Cockbain and Matt Giteau comes on for Stephen Larkham at fly-half.

49mins: Matt Burke goes close after breaking through the Argentine defence. The Wallabies then earn a well-deserved penalty which Flatley knocks over with ease from in front of the posts.

46mins: Contempomi misses a straightforward drop-goal attempt before a deep breakaway from Australia. But, Bill Young's final pass is adgudged forward.

43mins: The Pumas continue to struggle in the line-out in what is becoming an extremely scrappy affair.

42mins: Sailor makes another storming break downfield, as Joe Roff kicks out on the full downfield.

40mins: Play resumes as Daniel Vickerman replaces his team-mate.

41mins: Play is stopped after Wallaby vice-captain David Giffin is momentarily knocked unconscious and worryingly carried off the field on a stretcher.

40mins: Felipe Contepomi kicks-off to begin the second half.

40mins: Flatley converts another three points for Australia after Argentina are blown up for illegally handling the ball as the half-time whistle is blown.

34mins: Contepomi fails with his third attempt at goal as Australia kick long downfield to relieve some intense South American pressure.

32mins: Manuel Contepomi arrives back on the pitch after his sin-bin to, somewhat bizarrely, cap the Pumas best 10 minutes of the half.

28mins: Australia give away another silly penalty just outside the Argentine 22, to let their opponents - who have 14 men on the pitch - off the hook.

25mins: Argentina earn their second kickable penalty of the match as Contepomi grabs his side's first points of the tournament.

22mins: Manuel Contepomi receives his marching orders for 10 minutes after tackling Aussie full-back Rogers when he was in the air.

19mins: Wendell Sailor slams his way through three tackles to score the opening try of the World Cup after phase after phase of sweeping attacks from the hosts. Flatley fails with the extras.

16mins: The Pumas make another mistake as Contepomi kicks straight out from the re-start.

14mins: Steve Larkham sweeps through the Argentine line before kicking ahead to Rogers. The defending champions finally earn their second penalty which Flatley converts from in front of the posts.

11mins: Argentine hooker Ledesma again fails to deliver a straight throw at the line-out as Australia drvie upfield. But Matt Rogers knocks on.

8mins: Contepomi's half-way line penalty attempt drops marginally wide after the Wallabies are blown up for entering a ruck from the side.

7mins: Phil Waugh makes a powerful break for Australia, but his wayward pass is picked up by Felipe Contepomi.

4mins: Elton Flatley puts Australia into the lead with an impressive 25 metre penalty after Argentina are penalised for offside.
Australia 3-0 Argentina

3mins: Mario Ledesma's opening two line-out throws are crooked as the Argentine hooker starts poorly.

2min: The Pumas push Australia deep into their 22 after a superb kick by Agustin Pichot, but Argentina lose the resulting line-out.

1138: Matt Burke kicks off for Australia - as the home side surge forward but a poor kick results in an easy turnover for the visitors.

1132: The teams line up for the national anthems as Argentine opera singer Jose Cura and Australian soprano Deborah Cheetham hold fort.

1129: Australia captain George Gregan wins the toss and opts to kick-off.

1124: The home side run out to warm-up at the Telstra Stadium to huge applause. The weather looks perfect for what is expected to be a tough challenge for the defending champions.

Argentina are regarded as one of the world's most powerful sides and are traditionally feared for their huge pack.

But the Pumas have now added pace to their considerable arsenal of talents with the likes of scrum-half Agustin Pichot, fly-half Felipe Contepomi and wing Diego Albanese.

The game is scheduled to kick-off at 1130 and follows an impressive opening ceremony.
