Olympus Madrid 5-38 Worcester

Winger Miles Benjamin grabbed a try in each half for Worcester Warriors

Worcester picked up a bonus point as they ran in five tries against Olympus Madrid to record their first European Challenge Cup win of the season.

Alex Grove (2), Miles Benjamin and Jonny Arr all ran in tries to put Mike Ruddock's men in control by half-time.

After the break, Benjamin raced in for his second try, while George Crook kicked 13 points, converting all five tries, as well as adding a penalty.

Madrid's only score was a try by Matias Tudela midway through the first half.

Worcester, who lost their Challenge Cup opener at home to Montpellier 22-17 earlier this month, lie in the second of the two qualification places in their Pool 2 group table.

That extra bonus point keeps them a point clear of Montpellier, who lost 22-19 in another tight encounter on Friday night at home to group leaders Connacht.

Worcester's next Challenge Cup date is not until 12 December, when they take on Connacht at Sixways.

But they are back in Guinness Premiership action at Sixways next Saturday (24 October, 1500 BST) when they will protect this season's 100% home league record against Harlequins.

Worcester director of rugby Mike Ruddock told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"I thought it was a really strong first half by us as we came out strong and full of purpose.

"We scored four great tries in the first half and then a fifth early in the second and I thought we were on our way to 50-plus points.

"Even though we were under huge pressure for long periods of the second half we tackled very well and competed well showing a lot of spirit not to let them back in, so overall it was a really professional job."
