Andrew Sheridan signs new contract at Sale Sharks

Sheridan rejected contract offers from other clubs to stay with Sale

Sale and England prop Andrew Sheridan has signed a new contract with his club until the end of the 2012 season.

The 31-year-old, who had been linked with a move to France this summer, joined the Sharks from Bristol in 2003 and has played 100 games for the club.

Sale chief executive Mick Hogan said: "I know he has turned down some big offers from other clubs.

"He is one of the best prop forwards in the world and we are thrilled he has made this commitment to stay with us."

Hogan added: "This is a massive statement of intent by the club and Andrew. Steve Diamond signed him back in 2003 and once Andrew knew about Steve's return, he was delighted to put pen to paper."

Earlier in the season former coach Mike Brewer suggested the club could lose Sheridan and that he was considering offers from France but he has now committed himself to the Edgeley Park outfit.

He made the first of his 36 England appearances against Canada in 2004 and played in the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final for the national side.

The loose-head prop also toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2005 and 2009 and is renowned for his destructive scrummaging throughout world rugby.

Sale's newly-appointed executive director of sport Steve Diamond added: "I am very pleased Andrew has re-signed for the club.

"I remember watching him develop as a player and knew he was going to be one of the best as his career progressed.

"I have followed his progress with interest and am looking to build a team around Sherri and Mark Cueto who has also been a loyal servant to the club down the years."
