Sale Sharks romped to a club record win as they destroyed Spanish minnows Cetransa El Salvador in their European Challenge Cup opener at Edgeley Park.

Sale were only 36-11 up at the break, after Sisa Koyamaibole, Nick MacLeod, Anitelea Tuilagi, Tom Brady and Chris Bell ran in five first-half tries.

But it was carnage after the restart, as they crossed 10 more times.

Brady completed his treble, MacLeod, who kicked eight goals, added a second and Fergus Mulchrone also ran in two.

Sales's other try scorers were Chris Bell, Ben Cohen, Chris Jones, Rob Miller and Chris Leck, recalled stand-off Charlie Hodgson landing three out of his five pots at goal before the break.

Sale surpassed two club records, the 76-0 home win against Bristol Shoguns in November 1997, while their 12 tries that day were beaten by Friday night's new record of 15.

And full-back Nick Macleod, who took over kicking duties after moving to fly-half following Hodgson's half-time withdrawal, equalled a club record.

MacLeod's two tries, along with eight out of 10 successful conversion, matched Hodgson's individual best of 26 points in a match.

Ironically, central Spanish side El Salvador, from Valladolid, who have not won a European tie for six years, actually scored first.

But centre Jaike Carter's fourth-minute try merely had the effect of stinging Sale into life.

And the quick response of three tries in the space of six minutes from Koyamaibole, Macleod and Tuilagi soon set the Sharks on course for an easy win.

Brady ensured a bonus point with the fourth try on 21 minutes before Bell and Mulchrone all but wrapped up victory by the break.

Macleod took just two minutes of the second half to get the ball rolling again with his second try, before then converting Brightwell's score to take Sale to their half century.

Cohen, Jones, Brady (twice), replacement Miller and Mulchrone then all scored in an astonishing blitz of six tries in 14 minutes against the hapless Spaniards before Leck completed the rout.
