Northampton Saints former England Under-21s hooker Stuart Friswell has been forced into early retirement due to a neck injury.
The 25-year-old, who joined the club in the summer of 2008, was injured in a pre-season game against Cardiff Blues.
Although he underwent intensive rehab, he was advised to retire immediately.
"I am obviously very disappointed that my career has ended this way but thank the club for the opportunity they gave me," Friswell told the club's website.
"It was an exciting time time for me when I joined Saints in the summer.

"We were about to to return to the Premiership and I was looking forward to working hard to try and achieve a spot in the first team."
Friswell moved to Franklin's Gardens in June last year from National One side Coventry and had previously played for Leicester and Plymouth.
Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder said: "Stuart was a popular and committed member of the playing squad and wanted to get fit and show what he could do in the field.
"This has not been possible and all the Saints coaches wish him all the best for the future."
