Dallaglio urges Cipriani to stay

England fly-half Danny Cipriani

Lawrence Dallaglio has told England fly-half Danny Cipriani to "think about more than money" when considering whether to sign a new deal with Wasps.

Cipriani, 21, and James Haskell, 23, are among a group of players whose contracts expire in the summer.

Dallaglio, now on the Wasps board after Steve Hayes' takeover, said players should consider "where they have the best chance of winning trophies".

He added: "This is still one of the very best places to win trophies."

Dallaglio spent his entire career at Wasps before retiring after the club's 26-16 Premiership play-off final win against Leicester at Twickenham in May.

And the 36-year-old maintained that the sought-after Cipriani and England team-mate Haskell could fulfil their potential at the club.

"You make decisions in rugby on what you feel your priorities are," said the World Cup winner, whose new role on the board will primarily be in player recruitment and talent spotting.

I would like to stay at Wasps and have my future here. I've just got to know about the players who are going to stay around as well

"A player in the modern age has to think about more than money.

"They have to think about where they get their best rugby education. They have to consider what prepares them best for international rugby and there is no place that prepares them better than here.

"If you have the right place to thrive you can bring out the best in your talents. All the players here are in that environment and they will not necessarily find it elsewhere."

New owner Hayes, who is also managing director of Wycombe Wanderers FC, said on Wednesday that finalising new contracts for highly players like Cipriani and Haskell would be a priority.

Cipriani has previously said that he hopes the developments on the board help the club hold on to its best talent.

"I would like to stay at Wasps and have my future here. I've just got to know about the players who are going to stay around as well," Cipriani stated.

"I think Steve is going to try and get all the contracts done as a whole team. Everyone has got that bit of uncertainty above their heads so it's good that everyone knows where they are going.

"Wasps is such a great club. Ideally, I would like to stay at Wasps and get the whole structure in place and get everything right."
