Perpignan 19-12 Wasps

Dallaglio and Shaw reflect on Wasps' struggles in Perpignan

Perpignan: (16) 19
Tries: Gaston
Cons: Meyer
Pens: Meyer (3), Laharrague

Wasps: (9) 12
Pens: Staunton (3), King

A disappointing Wasps side fell to a sloppy Heineken Cup defeat to Perpignan as probable England three-quarter Josh Lewsey injured his knee.

Lewsey limped off with a suspected knee problem early in the second half, eight days before England play New Zealand.

Wasps were derailed by Perpignan flanker Ovidiu Tonita's try, and three penalties to trail 16-9 at the break.

Perpignan sealed the win late on but Alex King added to Jeremy Staunton's three kicks for a losing bonus point.

The visitors, with Lawrence Dallaglio and Phil Vickery continuing their comebacks from injury, put in an error strewn performance at the Stade Aime Giral.

Winger Paul Sackey failed to deal with a difficult kick inside his 22, and Perpignan punished him with the only try of the match after two minutes with Tonita managing to get the ball over the line after a line-out.

Wasps struggled to develop much in the way of attacking rhythm, and were restricted to Staunton's boot for their points and a seven-point half-time deficit.

Substitute Ayoola Erinle wasted two good chances after being put into space, before Lewsey limped off with his knee injury.

And a late kick from Nicolas Laharrague sealed a deserved win for the home side.

Wasps beat Perpignan 34-6 in France in 2004 en route to being crowned European champions but coach Ian McGeechan has much to ponder before his side resume their campaign with back-to-back games against Treviso in December.

  • Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan:

"We couldn't nail the game in the last 10 minutes. All we needed was one try, but we were probably a bit conservative early on.

"Getting the bonus point at the end was very important. If we weren't going to win, then it was a fall-back option.

"To have come away with nothing would have been very disappointing."
