Llanelli Scarlets confirm Sergeant departure

The Scarlets have announced that their chief executive Paul Sergeant will leave the Welsh region after less than 12 months in the role.

And the Scarlets board have swiftly appointed 48-year-old Welshman Mark Davies, previously European head of Honda Motorcycles to replace him.

Davies will take over from Sergeant in late July as the 49-year-old is to take up a "leading role in another company."

"I think we've achieved some important landmarks this season. said Sergeant.

Sergeant, the former Millennium Stadium and Wembley stadium manager, replaced long-term chief Stuart Gallacher in August 2009 after a stint as boss at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Now Davies, born in Aberdare, is preparing to replace Sergeant after 20 years with Honda, running both Honda's UK car and motorcycle businesses.

Davies, who leaves his role as head of Honda's European motorcycle business, has been praised by Scarlets chairman Huw Evans.

"In Mark we have a proven leader and business developer," said Evans.

There is still a lot of work to be done but in handing the baton over to a CEO of the calibre and track-record of Mark Davies, the next stage will be taken forward by a strong commercial leader

"He has led businesses in the UK and Europe and has strong corporate marketing and sales experience - working within a very competitive industry and a performance-driven business."

Sergeant was appointed onto the Scarlets board as the Parc y Scarlets region tapped into his expertise in stadium operations and events management to establish their business.

"I was only ever going to be with the Scarlets for a defined period of time which was agreed when I accepted the role as chief executive," said Sergeant.

"There are still some key things I need to pursue in my career and the region has been happy to support me with that stance that since I joined.

"I was given a clear remit by the board when I joined to use my broad experience to help manage the business and set-up clear and efficient systems for the running of a great stadium at Parc y Scarlets."

Chairman Evans said: "Paul has had a significant role to play over the past season at the Scarlets in helping align our business for future development and success."

But Sergeant added: "There is still a lot of work to be done.

"But in handing the baton over to a CEO of the calibre and track-record of Mark Davies, the next stage will be taken forward by a strong commercial leader."
