Leeds capture Fijian back Rabeni

Leeds Carnegie have signed Fiji international back Seru Rabeni on a one-year contract.

Rabeni, who can play winger or centre, was a free agent after his contract at Gloucester was cancelled due to medical reasons relating to a knee injury.

"I'm very happy to be here and this is a big opportunity," Rabeni told BBC Radio Leeds.

"I know the coaching staff very well from our Leicester days and I feel I'm in the right place."

Rabeni joined Leicester Tigers in 2004 and was a key man in their double winning season of 2006/07.

He signed a three-year contract at Gloucester earlier in the year, but that was cancelled in August following a failed medical after the player suffered a cartilage injury while playing for Fiji at the Pacific Nations Cup in June.

The injury was to the same knee that Rabeni had had reconstructed during his time at Leicester and he believes the joint is now as strong as ever.

"It's unfortunate how things at Gloucester turned out," explained Rabeni.

"My contract got cancelled for reasons only their medical team know.

"Speaking to other medical people they all say there is no problem with my knee, which is great news for me.

"I feel great that the medical team in Leeds have given me the green light to play, my knee is good to go."

Rabeni is expected to be fully fit to make his Leeds debut within a month.

Director of rugby Andy Key said: "We are delighted to have signed Seru.

"He is someone Neil [Back] and I know well from our time at Leicester and has proven quality at the highest level.

"The move has come about very quickly after a conversation between our captain Marco Wentzel and Seru when he was asking him what his options were for the new season.

"He was keen to remain in the Premiership and thankfully we have been able to agree a deal.

"He has trained with the players for the first time today [Friday] but will probably take a fortnight to get up to speed with our systems. He will hopefully be ready to make his debut by the end of September."

BBC Radio Leeds will have full match commentary of every Leeds Guinness Premiership game and Anglo-Welsh Cup matches, plus home European games.
