Gloucester name David McKnight as new chairman

David McKnight has been confirmed as Gloucester's new chairman to succeed Tom Walkinshaw who died in December.

McKnight has been involved in rugby for a number of years as an agent and as a financier, but joins the Kingsholm board in a non-executive capacity.

"He is not somebody who is putting cash in to the business," managing director Ken Nottage told BBC Gloucestershire.

"His role is about steering our board meetings for the most effective outcome and so far he's done a tremendous job."

Nottage also confirmed another non-executive director - David Grainger, who is a long-time friend of the Walkinshaw family - has joined the board.

He is joined by new finance director Chris Ferguson, existing non-executive director Wayne Humphries, Nottage and the club's major shareholders - Martin St Quinton, who owns 25%, and Ryan Walkinshaw, whose family own virtually all the rest.

Still only in his mid-20s, Ryan Walkinshaw ruled himself out of becoming his father's immediate successor as chairman in December, but Nottage has not ruled it out from happening at some stage in the future.

"Assuming that the Walkinshaw family do stay as the majority shareholders, I think there is a chance that somewhere in time that Ryan might become chairman," he said.

"I think if you spoke to him today he would tell you that he is too young and doesn't carry the relevant experience to hold the position of chairman as yet.

"But he is maturing and becoming more experienced everyday."
