Forrester suffers injury setback

James Forrester's return to competitive rugby after a career-threatening knee injury has been put on hold after it flared up during an A League game.

The 27-year-old number eight suffered a reaction playing for Gloucester's second string against Sale last week.

Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "We've got to get it checked out.

"We need to know if it's just coming back from such a serious injury or if there's something niggling away there."

Forrester has been working at his rehabilitation for over a year since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

His continued absence for Gloucester, combined with fellow back-rowers Akapusi Qera and Gareth Delve also being out with knee injuries, has stretched the team's resources this season.

With a run of matches against Sale, Newcastle and Wasps in the space of eight days coming up, Ryan is hoping Andy Hazell, Peter Buxton, Alasdair Strokosch and Luke Narraway all stay injury free.

"Over this three game period it's going to be difficult for us," he added. "Back-row is not an area we're strong in at the moment given the injuries that we've got, so fingers crossed over the coming games."
