Ryan angry after Gloucs failure

Interview: Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan

Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan made no excuses for his team's third failure in the Premiership play-offs after finishing top of the league.

They were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Leicester after Andy Goode's 78th-minute drop-goal won the match.

"It's time to take responsibility. It was a poor performance, and we've got to front that up," said Ryan.

"The fact that we didn't win isn't to be pushed into next year or learnt from, it's to be accountable for now."

Ryan was critical of his team's decision-making in the 26-25 defeat at Kingsholm, refusing to take any consolation that Gloucester had finished top of the Premiership season.

We keep messing up - Simpson-Daniel

"It's not about that, it's about nine months work to get this opportunity and we blew it," he said. "I think the next step is whether this side takes responsibility for what they did.

"If they just keep pushing it down, they keep saying 'we're learning' and everything else, that's not what it's about."

Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel felt he and his team-mates had to take responsibility for failing to deliver in the play-offs yet again.

"We all know we made errors on the field, we've got to be responsible enough to take it on the chin and hold our hands up and say 'yeah, we messed up'," said the 25-year-old.

"We managed to get a few points ahead and self-destructed and we don't exactly know why, but it doesn't mean that we're going to go and scratch our heads.

"We just keep on messing up, and we're going to get labelled with all sorts and we've got to accept that because judging on that performance that's how it looked. We've got to accept that until we can prove to people otherwise.

"And it's a long time until we can do that now."
