Teague makes his first step into the pro ranks with Edinburgh
Heriot's winger Marc Teague has signed a six-month contract with Edinburgh, making his first steps into the professional ranks aged 27.
Teague, who is a Scotland club international, impressed in pre-season but admits that he thought the chance of playing full-time had passed him by.
"It is something that I've been trying to do for years," he said.
"This can only be encouraging for the players in Premier One because it shows there is still a chance for them."
Teague was delighted that Edinburgh's coach had given him a chance to win a longer deal.
"It shows everybody that Andy Robinson wants to develop Scottish talent rather than bringing in overseas players," he said.
Teague had seen Nick De Luca, now a Scotland international, and Edinburgh newcomer of the year John Houston, progress from the same Heriot's back-line ahead of him.
Jim Thompson, Steve Turnbull, Fraser McKenzie and Bruce McNeil have also all made the step from Goldenacre to Edinburgh during the summer.
"I had played with all these boys and seen them earn recognition," he said.
"I thought I had played well over the past four seasons and scored tries.
"But I really wanted to prove my worth in the club international matches earlier on in the year to see how far away I was from the professional scene.
"Now I realise I have to take the next step, which is to try and break into the Edinburgh side and that is probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do."
Teague, who was Heriot's captain, thanked the club where he spent his whole career.
"I owe a lot to Heriot's and I think the fact they look to play open rugby and allow players to express themselves helps individuals develop," he said.
