Edinburgh claimed their fifth Magners League win of the season after a drab, one-sided contest at Murrayfield.

After an early penalty from Chris Paterson, Allan Jacobsen plunged over for the opening try on 33 minutes, with Paterson converting.

Calum MacRae kicked the only points for the visitors on a fiercely windy night.

Edinburgh stretched their lead when scrum-half Mike Blair led a break that allowed Mark Cairns to sprint under the posts and Paterson was again on target.

Edinburgh keep in touch at the top of the Magners League, while the Borders remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

The home side dominated the opening exchanges as injury-ravaged Reivers were forced on to the back foot.

However, the Murrayfield men were met by some dogged defence and had to be content with a single Paterson penalty awarded when the visiting backs strayed offside.

Reivers flanker John Dalziel was sin-binned for a professional foul and the extra man should have counted moments later.

With the line in sight, Phil Godman's wayward pass gave Alasdair Dickinson no chance.

Edinburgh made amends when Alasdair Strokosch got with in a metre before Jacobsen bundled over.

Paterson defied the gusting wind to slot the conversion.

The Borders broke their points duck after the interval when a swift attack forced an infringement from which MacRae was on target.

But Edinburgh extended their lead through a superb predator's try from Cairns.

Blair did the spadework with a scurrying run on the blindside before his pass let winger Cairns race in to score. Paterson to add the extras.

Some astute tactical kicking by Godman kept the Borders pinned in their own half and snuffed-out any hopes of a revival.

And Edinburgh were denied any more points by a combination of gutsy defending and sloppy handling.
